Marvel Fans in Shock: Anticipated Changes to Daredevil in 2024 MCU Reboot Ruffle Feathers

The highly anticipated MCU reboot of Daredevil faces backlash as fans question its ability to live up to the gritty and beloved Netflix version Will the new adaptation be able to capture the same essence and deliver a fresh take on the iconic hero?

The Marvel Cinematic Universe's Daredevil: Born Again has faced criticism for neglecting the original Netflix series. Marvel's Daredevil aired on Netflix for three seasons from 2015 to 2018. The actors Charlie Cox (Matt Murdock) and Vincent D'Onofrio (Wilson Fisk) have reprised their roles in the MCU, and a new series for the Marvel hero is in development for Disney+. Daredevil: Born Again is set to release in 2024. As the Marvel series prepares to reintroduce the character on the small screen, a member of Marvel's Daredevil has expressed dissatisfaction with the MCU's disregard for the Netflix show.

During an interview on the Ikuzo Unscripted podcast (via The Direct), Chris Brewster, the stunt double for Cox on the Netflix Daredevil series, criticized Daredevil: Born Again for ignoring the original show. Brewster disagrees with Marvel's decision to exclude those who worked on the original series, except for the returning cast members announced for Daredevil: Born Again. According to Brewster, "They [Marvel] really, truly don’t want it to be anything like the Marvel Netflix Daredevil."

“They have a strong desire for it to differ significantly from the Marvel Netflix Daredevil. Therefore, none of the individuals who contributed to the original series, except for the returning cast members, will be involved. Although there were some truly talented individuals who worked on that show and greatly enhanced its appeal, I believe Marvel is making a significant error in judgment. However, there is little that can be done about it."

Why The MCU's Daredevil Can't Be Like Netflix's Version

Daredevil: Born Again will have a distinct departure from the Netflix series in several aspects. Not only will there be a different team involved in the production behind-the-scenes, including new showrunners, stunt doubles, and more, but significant changes will also take place in front of the camera. Regrettably, neither Deborah Ann Woll's Karen Page nor Elden Henson's Foggy Nelson will make an appearance in this series. However, viewers can anticipate the return of Jon Bernthal's Punisher character.

Due to the transition from Netflix to Disney+ for the new Daredevil series, significant differences emerge between the two shows. The MCU's Daredevil cannot be identical to the character portrayed in the Netflix version, as evidenced by Cox's appearance as the hero in Disney+'s She-Hulk: Attorney at Law series. In this new show, Cox's Daredevil showcases acrobatic abilities in line with the character's comic book persona, which contrasts with the action in the Netflix series. Consequently, Brewster and other stunt doubles from the Netflix show were not included.

Another notable disparity lies in the tone of the two series. Cox clarifies that the Netflix and Disney+ Daredevil shows will diverge by aiming to captivate a slightly younger audience while preserving the essence of the original series. Cox asserts that Daredevil: Born Again should maintain its darkness but will not be as graphically violent as the Netflix series, drawing a delicate distinction between the two.
