Marketing Professionals: Short Job Tenures on the Rise

In the dynamic world of marketing, professionals frequently switch roles, with over two-thirds holding their current position for less than three years.

Two-thirds of marketers (66.3%) have only been in their current role for a maximum of three years, according to Our Website’s exclusive Career and Salary Survey.

The majority of marketers are still relatively new to their current role, with just 15.9% having been in their role for more than seven years. This is based on a survey of over 3,000 marketers.

The data, although slightly lower than last year's figure of 67.3%, suggests that in the marketing industry, staying in a role for a long period of time is rare. It is more common for marketers to move between jobs regularly.

It is interesting to note that the number of marketers who have been in their current position for less than 12 months is at its lowest since 2020. A little over one-fifth (22.4%) of marketers have recently started a new job, which is lower than the 27.3% reported in 2023. This indicates a challenging job market for marketers looking for new opportunities, leading some to stick with their current roles instead of taking a chance on a new job.

Not surprisingly, Gen Z marketers, who are early in their careers, are the most likely to have been in a role for less than 12 months, with 43.2% falling into this category. Additionally, 95% of Gen Z marketers have been in their current position for less than three years.

Almost a quarter of Gen Y/millennial marketers (22.9%) have been in their current role for less than 12 months, while over two-thirds (69.2%) have been in their role for less than three years. On the other hand, Gen X marketers are the least likely to have been in a role for less than 12 months, with only 12.2% falling into this category. Additionally, just under half (45.4%) of Gen X marketers have been in their current job for less than three years.

Our Website reported earlier this year that more than half of marketers are actively looking for a new job. Among them, almost three fifths (61.7%) of millennial marketers are considering changing jobs, followed by 58.9% of Gen Z and 58.4% of Gen X marketers.

Reasons for seeking a change differ among different age groups. Money is a significant factor for many. For example, 77.1% of Gen Z and 70.1% of millennials mention financial compensation as a motive.

Interestingly, over half (55.8%) of Gen X also express that money plays a role in their job search. Additionally, 55% of this group feel that the lack of growth opportunities at their current company is a key reason for considering a change.

We will be sharing additional exclusive news and features from the 2024 Career and Salary Survey on our Website in the upcoming weeks. This will include a detailed analysis on whether the length of time in a job is a worry for marketers. Click here to see all the content we have released up to now.
