As the SAG-AFTRA strike begins, Mandy Moore, star of This Is Us, shares her disappointment regarding the minuscule streaming residuals she received for the show. Despite her six seasons and 106 episodes as Rebecca, the matriarch of the Pearson family, and an Emmy nomination in 2019, it appears that Moore was not fairly compensated for her contributions. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Moore discusses the shockingly low residual checks she received, ranging from one penny to 81 cents, from the show's streaming agreement with Hulu. Read her full comments below:

The residual issue is a significant problem. As working actors, we are incredibly fortunate to have been part of successful shows that have brought us immense success in various ways. However, many actors in our position before us were able to rely on residuals to support themselves or at least cover their expenses. I recently had a conversation with my business manager, who informed me that he had received a residual payment of just one or two pennies.

Streaming Residuals Is A Core Issue Of The SAG-AFTRA Strike

Mandy Moore's remarks shed light on the crucial nature of streaming residuals as a core issue in the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike against Hollywood streamers and studios. On the picket lines, the actress was joined by Katie Lowes, renowned for her role in Scandal and guest appearances in This Is Us season 6, who reveals her lack of significant streaming residuals from Scandal's deals with Netflix and Hulu. Moore and Lowes emphasize the stark contrast to the past when television actors received substantial residuals from reruns on cable. However, the advent of streaming has completely transformed the entire model.

SAG-AFTRA presented a plan to tackle the problem of streaming residuals by suggesting a larger portion of revenue for actors when their TV shows succeed on streaming platforms. Unfortunately, AMPTP, the representative body for streamers and studios, rejected SAG's proposal and has yet to address the streaming residuals issue. As SAG-AFTRA goes on strike for fair compensation, it is hoped that the concerns expressed by Mandy Moore and other actors from the show This Is Us regarding streaming residuals will finally be acknowledged.
