Manchester City are in advanced talks with RB Leipzig to sign centre-back Josko Gvardiol.
We News understands the champions are yet to make a formal bid, however.
RB's managing director of sport, Max Eberl, has confirmed that discussions are taking place between the clubs. In an interview with local media outlet Leipziger-Volkszeitung, Eberl mentioned that Josko and his advisors have expressed their desire to transfer to Manchester City.
Gvardiol is a left-footed Croatia international centre-back coveted by a number of top clubs.
Chelsea and Tottenham both wanted to sign him last year.
Charting rise of Leipzig defender Gvardiol
From a remarkable showcase of his goal-scoring abilities to a disappointing defeat at the Etihad Stadium, Josko Gvardiol's encounters with Manchester City in the previous season's Champions League presented contrasting experiences. In the initial leg of their last-16 matchup, the talented young Croatian, who gained recognition for his performances at the World Cup while wearing a mask, proved why he is regarded as one of the most highly rated defenders in the world at just 21 years old. He displayed remarkable composure and skill in defense, culminating in a towering header that secured an equalizing goal for his German club.
RB Leipzig faced a devastating 7-0 defeat in Manchester three weeks later, unable to counter the formidable skills of Erling Haaland, who scored five goals. This humiliating experience may have served as a motivation for Gvardiol to strive for the highest level in the game. Surprisingly, the defeat did not lessen the interest from potential suitors.
