Man Engages in Extreme Political Protest, Sets Himself on Fire Outside Israeli Consulate in Atlanta, Police Report

A person remains critical after setting themselves on fire outside the Israeli consulate in Atlanta, believed to be a highly provocative political demonstration, according to Atlanta Police Chief Darin Schierbaum

A person set themselves on fire outside the Israeli consulate, leaving them in critical condition on Friday. Atlanta Police Chief Darin Schierbaum stated that it was "likely an extreme act of political protest." The incident occurred around noon outside the Consulate General of Israel, with investigators ruling out any connection to terrorism.

A security guard at a building in midtown Atlanta attempted to prevent a protester from setting themselves on fire around noon, as reported by police and fire officials at a news conference. The security guard suffered burns on their leg and wrist. The officials stated that a Palestinian flag was found at the scene and gasoline was used as an accelerant.

The chief assured that the staff at the Israeli consulate were safe and not at risk during the incident, which was contained to the area outside the building. He also stated that there were no efforts to enter the building. Schierbaum emphasized that the community was safe and that the police department would remain vigilant to ensure the safety of everyone, recognizing the tensions within the Jewish and Muslim communities.
