Makoto Shinkai's Suzume no Tojimari is a modern-day adventure-fantasy film set in Japan, featuring mysterious doors in different prefectures. The movie revolves around Suzume Iwato, a high school girl who meets a teenage boy named Munakata Souta.

Intrigued by Souta, Suzume follows him to an abandoned place where she discovers a mysterious door. Upon opening it, she is transported to a dream-like universe and experiences old flashbacks.

Suzume trips over a cat statue, which magically transforms into a white cat, startling her. She hurriedly makes her way to school, accidentally leaving the door open behind her. Later on, Suzume witnesses some supernatural occurrences that only she can see and rushes back to the open door.

Upon returning, Suzume encounters Souta once again, who reveals to her the existence of an evil force emerging from these doors. He explains that they must close all the doors scattered across Japan before it's too late.

Back at Suzume's house, Souta elaborates on the mysterious events that only they have the power to prevent. The enigmatic white cat reappears and turns Souta into Suzume's old, three-legged chair. With Suzume on his back, Souta chases after the cat and boards a ferry bound for another city. This marks the beginning of their journey to thwart a looming disaster and Suzume's journey towards coming to terms with her past.
