AI art has taken on the task of envisioning The Lord of the Rings characters as babies, inspired by Peter Jackson's highly successful trilogy that captured the essence of J.R.R. Tolkien's beloved fantasy novel. The first installment, The Fellowship of the Ring, chronicled the formation of the eponymous team, comprising Legolas the elf, Gandalf the wizard, and Gimli the dwarf. In a delightful display of creativity, lotrology on Instagram shared an endearing collection of AI art that includes the baby versions of these characters, as well as the elves Galadriel and Arwen. Feast your eyes on this enchanting artwork below:
The AI-generated artwork offers a convincing depiction of the childhood appearances of the heroes from Lord of the Rings, with the exception of Gandalf, who retains the same elderly look as Ian McKellen's iconic portrayal.
Given Gandalf's status as one of the oldest beings in Middle-earth, it is not surprising that AI struggles to envision a younger version of him. Prior to assuming the role of Gandalf, he existed as a divine being called a Maia, and was sent to Middle-earth in the Third Age to aid in the battle against Sauron. The Fellowship was formed in 3018, meaning that Gandalf's physical body is approximately 2000 years old at the beginning of the Lord of the Rings saga.
Legolas, despite his youthful appearance, is actually quite ancient. The evidence suggests that this immortal Elf is somewhere between 2000 and 3000 years old. Similarly, Galadriel is also one of the oldest beings in Middle-earth. While her exact age is a subject of debate, she was born during the Year of the Trees, making her approximately 7000 to 8000 years old in the Lord of the Rings. In The Rings of Power, Galadriel is depicted as a child, portrayed by Amelie Child Villiers, which aligns closely with the AI art.
Arwen's age is provided in the Lord of the Rings appendices, where it is revealed that she was born in the year 241 of the Third Age. This means that at the time of the events depicted in the story, she is approximately 2,777 years old. On the other hand, Gimli's age is much simpler to determine compared to his elven counterparts. Dwarves typically have a lifespan of only two to three hundred years. In the Lord of the Rings movies, Gimli is portrayed as relatively young, around 139 years old.
