Idina Menzel recently discussed the intricate factors that led to her separation from Taye Diggs in 2013 during an episode of the podcast "Dinners on Me with Jesse Tyler Ferguson." Ferguson, who initially admired Menzel as a fan during her role in the original Broadway production of "Rent," eventually acted alongside her in "Hair" and developed a friendship.
"Rent" is also the place where she crossed paths with Diggs. They tied the knot in 2003 and, as time went by, joyfully became parents to a son named Walker. Menzel shared with Ferguson that although they continuously showed their unwavering support for each other, being in an interracial relationship subjected them to external challenges.
"The interracial aspect played a major role, in my opinion. He has also discussed it," she shared. "When we are in the theater, it becomes insignificant. We have deep affection for each other, form intimate relationships regardless of sexual orientation, and consider ourselves best friends with anyone who wishes to be."
However, she acknowledged that stepping outside the protective bubble of the theater community presented a different experience.
"He had personal matters to handle regarding that," she referred to Diggs. "It appeared that the community was let down by him due to his marriage to a Caucasian Jewish woman from a television program that has slipped our memory. Therefore, I also embraced that burden."
"I'd be dishonest if I claimed there were no moments when I contemplated, Oh, dear, people are bound to be amazed [if we separated]. Perhaps they found it endearing that we encountered each other in Rent," he expressed. "There were not many couples resembling us within the theater community, and I am aware that there are not many performers as gifted as she is... and on top of that, we have to consider the aspect of being of different ethnic backgrounds. It was effortless for people to support us."
Menzel tied the knot with actor turned therapist Aaron Lohr in 2017.
