Praise the Lorde: Her next album is on the horizon.
Lorde, at 27, sported a set of AirPods Max headphones in pictures shared on Instagram on Sunday, December 17. As she relaxed in pajamas on the floor, the singer (real name Ella Yelich-O’Connor) mentioned in the caption that she was "listening to myself."
The fans immediately reacted, making conclusions in the comments section. "Mother is coming back," one user wrote, while others added, "OH MY GOD" and "ALBUM ANNOUNCEMENT WHEN."
When a commenter exclaimed, "L4 SEASON IS UPON US," Lorde intervened to provide clarity. "We're not quite as close as you guys think...," she explained. "I'm just really excited and needed to share that with you."
She also encouraged fans to "begin your excitement at a low level and gradually increase it to a gentle simmer" because she was "preparing herself for this new chapter."

Lorde's Instagram has been cleared of all posts except for two. Among the recent pajama pictures, her feed includes a gallery from August 10, showing her playfully swimming in a pool in Oslo, Norway. "After the show, we went swimming," she wrote. "These moments are beautiful and overwhelming, and there's so much to share with you. No, this isn't the beginning of something big, I just want you to know that there's a light inside of me ... I'll show it to you soon."
In October, a fan spotted Lorde riding the subway in New York City. "Anyway, I met Lorde yesterday and let her know that she wrote Melodrama specifically for me," wrote the fan, who posted a photo of them together. The "Royals" singer was wearing her AirPods Max for the ride, a detail that did not go unnoticed by a fan account when they shared the photo.
In 2017, the account stated that the last time she was spotted wearing headphones on NYC trains, she was testing her own album. Lorde later clarified, "I was actually listening to myself."
Her most recent album, Solar Power, was released in 2021 and reached No. 1 in New Zealand and No. 5 in the United States. The album received mixed reviews, with Rolling Stone describing it as "largely meandering through anxiety, with a relatable approach to all that’s going on in the world."
