Neil McCauley famously declared, “I told you I’m never going back.” However, Michael Mann is contradicting that with plans to produce a sequel to his acclaimed film this year.
Mann debuted his iconic cops-and-robbers film in 1995, featuring Robert DeNiro as McCauley and Al Pacino as Vincent Hanna, a mustachioed thief and detective who excel at their respective roles. McCauley famously stated, “I do what I do best; I take scores. You do what you do best; try to stop guys like me.”
The impact of Heat on popular culture is undeniable. Films like The Town, Den of Thieves, The Dark Knight, and specifically Grand Theft Auto V, all share elements of Heat, including its climactic heist at the Federal Reserve. In August 2022, Michael Mann collaborated with Meg Gardiner to release Heat 2, a well-received novel that continues the story from the film and delves into the characters' earlier years. This novel is set to be adapted into a film in the near future.
Michael Mann will shoot Heat 2 in 2024
In a recent interview with Variety, Mann said he plans to “absolutely make” Heat 2 in 2024. He also described it as both a “prequel and sequel” to the original film.
He is currently in the process of writing the screenplay. According to Michael Mann, Warner Bros. has been very supportive and eager to see the screenplay. Mann has confirmed that filming for 'HEAT 2' will start this year, and Adam Driver is in discussions to star in the film.
On January 4, 2024, Film Updates reported that Adam Driver is likely to take on the iconic role of McCauley in the upcoming film, following his collaboration with the director in Ferrari. When asked about the role, Driver responded, "Perhaps. We don’t talk about that yet," to Deadline in October of last year.
Rewritten
Adam and I had a strong connection and worked together with an intense work ethic. We enjoyed each other's company and had a great artistic collaboration.
Fans have been campaigning for other actors to join the project: some are pushing for Oscar Isaac to play Hanna, while others believe Jon Bernthal would be better suited for the role of McCauley, particularly in light of Mann's harsh criticism of him earlier in his career.
The novel's official synopsis describes a new story that unfolds before and after the events of the film. It introduces new characters involved in high-stakes heists and thrilling action sequences. The story takes place in various locations, from the streets of LA to the inner workings of rival Taiwanese crime syndicates in Paraguay, and a drug cartel money-laundering operation in Mexico. HEAT 2 sheds light on the risky operations of international crime organizations and the agents dedicated to stopping them, while also delving into the lives of those who exist within both worlds.

Editor's P/S
As a long-time fan of Michael Mann's Heat, I am thrilled to hear that a sequel is finally in the works. The original film is a masterpiece of the crime genre, and I can't wait to see what Mann has in store for us this time around. I'm particularly excited about the possibility of Adam Driver taking on the role of Neil McCauley, as I think he has the acting chops to pull it off. I also appreciate that Mann is planning to make Heat 2 both a prequel and a sequel, as I think this will allow him to explore the characters and their relationships in more depth.
I'm also intrigued by the idea of the story taking place in various locations around the world, as this will give the film a more international feel. Overall, I have high hopes for Heat 2 and I can't wait to see it when it finally hits theaters. I'm confident that it will be a worthy successor to the original film and that it will further cement Michael Mann's status as one of the greatest directors of all time.
