Eric Martin Talks Loki Season 2

Our website had the opportunity to interview Eric Martin regarding the fifth episode of season 2 of Loki. During the interview, Martin provided insights into the inner workings of the writers' room for Loki and hinted at exciting revelations that await viewers in the highly anticipated season finale. Additionally, Martin expressed his enthusiasm for the integration of the wider Marvel narrative into Loki and his desire to continue collaborating with Marvel in the future.

Our website is buzzing about Loki season 2, episode 5. It was truly mind-blowing and this show continues to surpass expectations. We're eagerly counting down the days until episode 6 on Thursday. While we understand that Loki's crew consists of societal misfits, it's intriguing to see B-15 standing out from the rest. Could there be a deeper story behind her character?

Comment from Eric Martin: Personally, I didn't perceive anyone in Loki's crew as a loser. I felt it was a natural choice to infuse Wunmi and B-15's characters with authenticity and heartfelt depth, considering who they are as individuals.

Do you have an explanation for Loki's newfound ability? Is he now capable of traversing multiple universes effortlessly?

Eric Martin: We'll witness the development of this power in the upcoming episode, but it seems evident that he has acquired mastery over it based on the events of episode five.

In the past, did Loki consistently recruit his comrades from the TVA instead of the true mastermind, He Who Remains? It's akin to the concept of Ouroboros, symbolizing a snake devouring its own tail. Is this the moment when Loki begins gathering these individuals to establish the TVA, instead of He Who Remains, the assumed culprit from the past?

Eric Martin: To find out the answers, you'll have to watch episode six. However, it is certain that Loki recruited them in episode five.

Can you talk to me about the Loki writers' room? How does it all work? What does that whiteboard look like to tell a story like this?

Eric Martin expressed his gratitude towards the group of talented writers he hired for the writer's room. These writers were Rachel Alter, Brett Moline, Amber Dupre, Katharyn Blair, and Kasra Farahani. Elena Baron served as the writer's assistant, while Michael Benedetti was Eric Martin's personal assistant.

The focus of the writer's room was primarily on developing characters. While the storylines may have been unconventional, the main priority was always understanding and depicting the desires and motivations of the characters. Consequently, the team diligently tracked the movements and development of each character throughout the narrative.

Interesting. Was there any change in the development process for the characters and their story arcs in Loki season 2?

Eric Martin: No, there wasn't. We saw a real progression in that aspect. We initially discussed it during season one, but it wasn't until after the release of season one that we delved deeper into it. However, our intention was always for season 2 to build upon and evolve from season 1.

Yes, it truly is. It is the most exceptional television show from the MCU that I have witnessed thus far. Was it intentional to have Mobius' son, resembling the dynamic of Loki and Thor, with one inclined towards destruction while the other displaying a sense of reason?

Eric Martin: No, not at all. I hadn't even considered that, but I really appreciate the comparison. Perhaps it subconsciously influenced my thinking. I can't be certain.

Why did Loki choose to go to the moment right before the temporal loom kind of exploded rather than going somewhere before his death?

Eric Martin: I think you'll have to watch next episode to see.

How much went into the choice of the "Velvet Underground", Oh! Sweet Nuthin's song that was played in the show this week?

Eric Martin: There was a significant amount of discussion surrounding it, specifically Aaron and Justin. They aimed to create that particular atmosphere, which I found amusing considering I regularly listened to Velvet Underground while writing this season. Typically, I would just play music and dive into the writing process, but that topic never really arose. They arrived at it independently.

This episode features numerous enjoyable references to previous moments, such as the "gut you like a fish" line from season one. Which callbacks from Loki season two have been your personal favorites thus far?

Eric Martin: I'm sorry, but I don't have a suitable response for your question regarding callbacks. The concept of callbacks wasn't really on my mind. I consider it all as a cohesive unit, so it feels more like a natural progression of everything.

In regards to Casey, we are introduced to his backstory on Alcatraz. It becomes apparent that he possesses numerous valuable artifacts in his drawer during season 1. Can we interpret this as a deliberate choice to portray him as a thief?

Eric Martin: No, but I find that interpretation amusing. It's quite humorous to think that Casey has been stealing from the TVA. He's simply a kleptomaniac, and we haven't even realized it yet.

In addition to the D.B. Cooper mystery that Loki is connected to in season 1, we now have the escapees from Alcatraz. What other unsolved mysteries from the real world do you believe Loki could be involved in?

Eric Martin expresses excitement and acknowledges the abundance of mysteries associated with Loki, emphasizing that one can attribute any minor enigmatic occurrence to the mischievous God.

What are some of your favorite Easter eggs that we have come across this season?

Eric Martin: I find the abundance of Easter eggs scattered throughout OB, the guidebook, handbook, Timely, and the interconnection between all of these elements, to be immensely enjoyable.

The record playing in the last episode gave off a similar feeling. Did the upcoming two Avengers movies play a role in your mindset while writing Loki season 2? Or was that completely separate from the writing process?

Eric Martin: No, not at all. Luckily, we were able to focus solely on creating the best season of TV possible without any pressure or mandates. Our goal was simply to deliver a fantastic product.

Is there any discussion about you and Michael Waldron, who started the Multiverse Saga, writing the next two Avengers movies? I know there are many fans who would love to see that happen. Marvel has been so generous in allowing me to work on season two, and I'm incredibly grateful for that. As long as they want me, I'll be there.
