Sparta Prague had a really tough day at the office on Thursday. Last week, they were already behind 5-1 in the Europa League round-of-16 first leg. However, things got even worse for them at Anfield. Within just 15 minutes, they found themselves trailing 9-1 on aggregate as Liverpool scored goals from Darwin Nuñez, Bobby Clark, Mo Salah, and Cody Gakpo in a quick rampage.
Things started to look up for Sparta momentarily when Veljko Birmančević scored right before half-time, reducing the aggregate deficit to seven goals with a scoreline of 4-1 on the night.
However, Liverpool continued their dominant performance, with goals from Gakpo and Dominik Szoboszlai securing a 6-1 victory on the night. This resulted in a crushing 11-2 aggregate win, making it one of the most one-sided matches you will ever witness in European competition.
Klopp shared with reporters after the game that the boys had a fantastic start. They were aggressive and scored some amazing goals.
He found it odd to be up by four goals in just 14 minutes. It made the game feel strange because it's hard to stay motivated when you're already winning by so much. People probably started thinking about the next games at that point.
Salah scored his 20th goal of the season in all competitions, a milestone that no Liverpool player has achieved for seven consecutive seasons.
Klopp mentioned that Salah's impressive achievement is not unexpected, as he is a truly exceptional player. Salah made his first start since January 1 after recovering from an injury.
Klopp shared, "I've worked alongside him for seven years, and one thing we never had to worry about was consistency. Mo continues to deliver and his desire to succeed never wavers. His quality has always been there, but his hunger to score just keeps growing."
He continued, "Since joining us, he has shown improvement in many areas. I am not as surprised as some may be. I actually thought it would have happened already this season, but unfortunately, he was injured for a period of time. Otherwise, it would have happened earlier, maybe in January or February."
It's fantastic to have him back, really good, as I mentioned, great news.
Klopp, who has been with Liverpool for nine years and is leaving at the end of the season, was asked if he felt sorry for Sparta during the heavy defeat.
Klopp celebrates after the drubbing.
Klopp celebrates after the drubbing.
"There is a difference in quality," he said. He mentioned speaking with Sparta's manager, Brian Priske, after the game. "It was obvious even before the game. It's always the same - when the team with better quality also shows a good attitude, like we did, it makes things difficult. So, where is the opportunity?"
In my past, I worked for a smaller club in Germany called Mainz before joining Sparta. While Sparta is not a small club, at Mainz, we had to work extra hard to win games without any assistance from our opponents.
The team showed an incredible attitude during the game, making it tough for the opponents. As we all know, things can go either way in such situations.
Editor's P/S:
The match between Liverpool and Sparta Prague was a stark display of the gulf in quality between the two teams. Liverpool's relentless attacking prowess and Sparta's inability to keep up resulted in an embarrassing defeat for the latter. The 11-2 aggregate scoreline is a testament to Liverpool's dominance and Sparta's shortcomings.
While Liverpool's emphatic victory was impressive, it's important to remember that Sparta faced an uphill battle from the outset, having conceded five goals in the first leg. The aggregate deficit made it virtually impossible for them to mount a comeback, despite a brief glimmer of hope when they scored before half-time. Ultimately, Liverpool's superiority proved too much to overcome, and Sparta were left to rue a disappointing performance on a night that will live long in the memory for all the wrong reasons.
