Highlights
Little Nightmares 3 introduces new playable characters, Low and Alone, and fans are excited to see how their skills and personalities differ from previous protagonists.
The Little Nightmares universe is expansive, with rich lore that delves into the origins of the protagonist, Six. Serving as a prequel to the original game, the sequel reveals the story behind her solitary journey.
In addition to the core game, the franchise extends its reach with DLC expansions, captivating animated comics, and an audio-fiction series named The Sounds of Nightmares. These additions enhance the immersive experience for dedicated fans.
Ever since the announcement of Little Nightmares 3 at Gamescom 2023, speculation has been rampant regarding the focus of the narrative. Fans are eagerly speculating whether Six, the protagonist of the first Little Nightmares, will make a return, especially now that two new characters, Low and Alone, have taken center stage. The trailer provided players with their first glimpse at these playable characters.
The reveal of Little Nightmares 3 is incredibly exciting news for series fans, particularly considering that the sequel was released over two years ago. While it remains unconfirmed if this will be the final addition to the franchise, it could potentially conclude the storyline of Six once and for all. To enhance the world-building, Bandai Namco is borrowing an interesting concept from The Callisto Protocol.
The World of Little Nightmares is Vast
The lore in the games has a deep and intricate backstory. Little Nightmares 2 is actually a prequel to the original game, revealing how Six ended up alone. Although some speculate that Little Nightmares 3 will follow the same pattern, based on the available information, it seems to take place after Six and Mono's journeys. Nonetheless, it will be fascinating to see the differences in skills and personalities between the new protagonists, Low and Alone.
Interestingly, the horror setting's backstories are constantly explored beyond the main game. The Secrets of the Maw DLC for Little Nightmares introduced a new protagonist, the Runaway Kid, while hinting at the sequel. Additionally, there are free comics available for Little Nightmares, currently consisting of six animated episodes. While it may be a coincidence, this could be related to Six's name.
The franchise will expand on these other mediums by introducing an audio-fiction series titled The Sounds of Nightmares. This technique is reminiscent of The Callisto Protocol's podcast, Helix Station, which premiered on Apple Podcasts in November 2022. Helix Station takes place prior to the events of the horror game and follows the adventures of a skip tracer, the game's equivalent of a bounty hunter.
While it has not been confirmed, The Sounds of Nightmares appears to be a prequel as well. The trailer for Little Nightmares 3 does not feature the podcast's main character, Noone, suggesting that she existed before the third game. Furthermore, there is speculation that one of the villains, an eldritch god-like being, is responsible for the bleak state of the world. The universe of Little Nightmares is incredibly dark and dismal for the children living in it, and there may have been an event that caused this.
Currently, the audio-fiction series consists of only two chapters, with a teaser for Chapter 3. You can listen to the podcast on different platforms, such as the official Bandai Namco website, YouTube, Apple Podcasts, and Spotify. It remains to be seen what new information the podcast will provide to keep the excitement for Little Nightmares 3 alive, but the community has responded positively thus far.
Little Nightmares 3 will be released in 2024 for PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
