Patrick Swayze’s widow, Lisa Niemi, recently shared her thoughts on her late husband’s battle with cancer before his passing in 2009.
During an interview on the “Amy and T.J. Podcast” on Monday, April 8, Niemi, 67, recalled the moment when Swayze first learned about his pancreatic cancer diagnosis. She revealed that he turned to her and expressed, “I’m a dead man,” which left her feeling uncertain as she was not familiar with the severity of the disease. He had a deep understanding of the challenges associated with pancreatic cancer, and the grim prognosis often associated with it.
Niemi shared that the doctor advised her to consider getting her affairs in order sooner rather than later, even though she could be treated aggressively for her illness.
Despite being married for 34 years, Swayze passed away at the age of 57. Niemi, more than a decade after his death, is still coping with the loss and admits that it is not always easy to talk about her late husband.
"It brings up memories that are not all that pleasant," she shared. "But I understand the struggle of fighting for someone you love, especially when resources are limited. We all have to go at some point, but we deserve a fighting chance."
After Swayze's diagnosis, his family devoted all their energy to finding him the best treatment. Niemi wasted no time contacting her sister-in-law, who was an oncologist, for advice. The doctor suggested enrolling the actor in a clinical trial.

Niemi shared with cohosts Amy Robach and T.J. Holmes that a life-changing event can happen unexpectedly, altering everything in an instant. They always considered themselves as optimistic realists, acknowledging the harsh reality of the situation while holding onto hope for a positive outcome. Despite staying positive, the experience felt like a never-ending nightmare.
Now, Niemi focuses on raising awareness about pancreatic cancer and its symptoms, emphasizing the importance of early detection for better outcomes. However, the effectiveness of treatment can vary from person to person.
"It's important to remember that what works for one person may not work for another," she explained. "That's why targeted therapy and molecular profiling are crucial in guiding patients towards the most effective treatment for them."
Following the passing of her first husband, Niemi announced her marriage to jeweler Albert DePrisco in 2014. Despite facing criticism from fans for moving on, she found happiness in her new relationship.
"Some die-hard fans of Patrick may think I'm bad or dislike me just because I used to be married to him. But you learn to cope with it and keep going," she shared on Monday. She also mentioned that "life is too short" to not find love again. "I've been tempted many times to say, 'Hey, put yourself in my shoes. Go ahead, tell me. Just because I lost my husband doesn't mean I don't love him anymore.' How can you say that?"
