Lionel Messi has joined David Beckham's MLS team, Inter Miami, on a free transfer. The official announcement from the club was made on Saturday evening in anticipation of a presentation scheduled for Sunday.
Messi, the former forward of Barcelona, became available after he allowed his contract to expire with the French champions Paris Saint-Germain.
Though Barcelona had an interest in re-signing Messi for the Nou Camp, they were unable to make an offer due to the financial fair play regulations of LaLiga.
Messi expressed his enthusiasm in embarking on the next phase of his career with Inter Miami in the United States, despite the interest from Saudi Arabia. The team, which was established two years prior, joined the MLS in 2020.
"This is an amazing opportunity, and together, we will continue to develop and enhance this extraordinary project. Our aim is to collaborate and accomplish the objectives we have set, and I am extremely excited to begin contributing in my new home."
Messi will make his debut for Inter Miami CF on July 21, when they face off against Cruz Azul, a team from LIGA MX, in the opening match of the Leagues Cup. This new tournament will temporarily halt the league seasons of MLS and LIGA MX from July 21 to August 19, with the purpose of determining the three clubs that will qualify for the 2024 Concacaf Champions Cup.
