Lindsey Vonn has made the decision to undergo knee replacement surgery due to multiple injuries she has endured during her career.
In a message shared on Instagram on Tuesday, April 9, the 39-year-old former Olympian revealed, "After careful consideration, extensive research, and consulting with numerous doctors, I have chosen to have a knee replacement. My knee has severe tri-compartment degeneration, with the lateral compartment being the primary source of pain."
Vonn had surgery last year to delay getting a knee replacement, but unfortunately, it was not successful. Her doctor, Dr. Hackett, performed a preparation surgery in July to try to postpone the replacement and also prepare other parts of her knee for the future. However, despite their efforts, Vonn reached a point where her knee could no longer handle the activities she enjoyed.
The skier underwent a successful surgery called a “Mako Robot-assisted lateral unicompartmental replacement.” This procedure involved removing part of her bone and replacing it with titanium. Vonn shared that the surgery went well and she is now in the process of recovering. She is optimistic that this surgery will enable her to lead the active lifestyle she has always desired.
In a message she shared, Vonn expressed her gratitude for all the well wishes she has received. She reassured her supporters that this surgery is just another obstacle in her life's journey and she is determined to bounce back quickly. Vonn confidently stated, "You can't keep me down for long!"

After her surgery in July 2023, Vonn shared the reason behind needing knee surgery.
In her Instagram Story, she explained, "I've been coping with the wear and tear from my ski racing days and trying to handle the pain as best as I can. This surgery is a significant step towards long-term relief. There may be more work ahead, possibly another surgery, but I'm hopeful that this will provide some relief for now."
Vonn has had an impressive career, competing in four Olympics and winning three gold medals. She holds the title of being the only American woman to win an Olympic downhill gold and the only American woman to earn four World Cup titles.
Despite her success, Vonn has also faced numerous injuries throughout her career. In February 2019, she announced her retirement, citing the toll that years of wear and tear from the sport had taken on her body after decades of competing on the slopes.
The past two weeks have been incredibly tough for me emotionally. I am faced with a challenge as my body is not in sync with what my mind and heart believe I can do. In a heartfelt statement shared on my Facebook page, I expressed my struggle with this disconnect. Despite many sleepless nights, I have come to terms with the fact that I can no longer pursue ski racing. My final races will be at the World Championships in Åre, Sweden next week, competing in Downhill and Super-G events.
Even after announcing my retirement, the effects of my knee injuries continued to haunt me. In November 2020, I disclosed to We magazine that I underwent nine surgeries, resulting in having “a plate and 18 screws” in my arm.
