Leylah Fernandez, ranked 20th in the world, guided Canada to their maiden Billie Jean King Cup victory on Sunday. She clinched the title by defeating Italy's Jasmine Paolini with a score of 6-2, 6-3. Fernandez remained unbeaten throughout the week, winning all five of her matches. Canada emerged victorious in Group C by defeating Poland and host nation Spain, and went on to win against Czech Republic in the semifinals before triumphing over Italy in the final.
"It holds immense significance for me," said Fernandez, the runner-up of the 2021 US Open, during an interview with CNN Sports' Patrick Snell.
"Billie Jean King's contributions to women's rights and tennis are immeasurable. Winning the prestigious tennis championship under her name not only boosts my confidence, but also instills a profound sense of assurance in both my fellow teammates and the nation of Canada."
We are tremendously proud and eager to celebrate tonight. Additionally, we are excited to bring this achievement back home. Marina Stakusic, who was previously less known and ranked at 258 in the world, played a significant part in Canada's victory. Throughout the week, she attained a 3-1 record, which highlighted a remarkable 7-5 6-3 win against world No. 43 Martina Trevisan in the Sunday final. This victory marked her first triumph over a top-50 player.
Canada won the Billie Jean King Cup, formerly known as the Fed Cup, for the first time.
Stakusic, an unexpected selection made by Canada's captain Heidi El Tabakh, managed to secure impressive wins against Magdalena FrÄch, who holds the 63rd position in the world rankings, and Rebeka Masarova of Spain, ranked 65th.
Stakusic expressed her joy and gratitude, stating that this week was the most exceptional one in her life. According to Reuters, she enthusiastically shared her feelings during an on-court interview. Despite not participating in any primary WTA singles event this season, the 18-year-old has impressively triumphed in three ITF competitions since the start of September, demonstrating her appreciation for El Tabakh's trust in her abilities.
El Tabakh expressed her feelings, saying, "I am at a loss for words. This team has exceeded my expectations, and I couldn't be prouder. It feels like a dream come true."
Canada's triumph follows closely behind the men's achievement of securing the nation's inaugural Davis Cup championship only a year ago.
