Composer Akira Yamaoka, renowned for his work on the music of the Silent Hill series, is set to showcase his talent in a new third-person action horror game called Stray Souls. Given Yamaoka's reputation, fans of his work won't be surprised by this news, as Stray Souls draws inspiration from Silent Hill and The Blair Witch Project. Interestingly, the game is being directed by a former member of the Blair Witch developer, Bloober Team.
Since joining Konami in 1993, Yamaoka has ventured into various roles, composing memorable audio for video games and films. While most recognize him as a composer for titles including Contra: Hard Corps, Shadows of the Damned, and Bloober Team's The Medium, he has also served as a music director and sound producer. Additionally, his iconic and distinctive music will be resurrected for the highly anticipated Silent Hill 2 remake.
Yamaoka is set to be a guest composer for indie developer Jukai Studio's upcoming game, Stray Souls. The game's latest trailer features one of Yamaoka's songs, titled "Splintered Minds." In addition, Yamaoka will be contributing to the soundtrack of Slitterhead, a highly anticipated horror game directed by Keiichiro Toyama, the creator of Silent Hill.
According to the trailer and the game's Steam page, Stray Souls follows the story of Daniel, who embarks on a chilling journey to the haunted town of Aspen Falls. In a typical horror game fashion, Daniel inherits his estranged grandmother's house and makes the ill-advised decision to accept it. Thus begins a harrowing adventure filled with eerie creatures, unsettling environments, and a mysterious woman.
Daniel unwittingly becomes a central figure in an evil plot orchestrated by his grandmother, forcing the adolescent to unravel his family's hidden past and battle hordes of monsters with exceptional precision akin to souls-like gameplay. The game will also incorporate expected elements such as puzzle-solving, resource management, dynamic weather patterns, and paranormal phenomena. While Jukai Studio has yet to announce a specific release date, the developer previously released an alpha demo for Stray Souls a couple of years ago, leaving open the possibility of another demo to satiate survival horror enthusiasts before the game's official launch.
In addition to composing music for Stray Souls, Slitterhead, and the Silent Hill 2 remake, Yamaoka has also contributed to the soundtrack of Decarnation, a psychological horror game released in May. There is also a new Silent Hill movie in development, which will follow the storyline of Silent Hill 2 and protagonist James Sunderland. Despite limited details about the film thus far, there is a hopeful anticipation that Yamaoka will once again showcase his musical prowess by contributing to its soundtrack, much like he did with two previous Silent Hill films.
Stray Souls is currently in development.
