Francis Lee, the ex-England and Manchester City forward, has passed away at the age of 79 following a courageous fight against cancer. With two old First Division championships under his belt, Lee had a fruitful career, netting over 200 goals and earning 27 appearances for the national team, scoring 10 goals throughout his 17-year tenure.
Lee began his professional journey at Bolton, netting an impressive 92 goals in 182 matches. Subsequently, he made a significant move to City, with a transfer fee of £60k, breaking the club's previous record. Lee's contributions played a pivotal role in City's triumph as they clinched the First Division title in 1968, followed by securing an FA Cup in 1969 and the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1970.
Remarkably, he maintained his position as City's leading scorer for a remarkable five consecutive seasons, spanning from 1969/70 to 1973/74. His extraordinary performances during this time earned him both the prestigious 1970 Player of the Year award and the 1971 Golden Boot award.
