Beckham, having more international appearances than Charlton, expressed his eternal gratitude towards Sir Bobby who guided Manchester United to notice him during one of Charlton's soccer camps. On Instagram, Beckham, who shares the same name Robert, acknowledged Sir Bobby as his inspiration and a global hero, particularly for winning the 1966 World Cup, not only for Manchester and their country. Additionally, Beckham's father, Ted, was a devoted supporter of United.

However, these significant achievements have since been surpassed by other players. Gary Lineker, a former Barcelona striker, came close to eclipsing Charltons record but fell just short, concluding his international career with an admirable tally of 48 goals. Lineker expressed his utmost respect and admiration for Charlton, hailing him as "Englands greatest ever player."

While his overall contribution to the game was exceptional, with him leading United to their first European title by scoring two crucial goals in the 1968 European Cup final against Benfica, it was the 1966 World Cup that truly defined Charlton's career.
