England's Lauren James has been handed a two-match ban by FIFA, which means she will be unavailable for the quarter-final and potentially the semi-final of the World Cup. The ban stems from an incident in England's last-16 victory, where James was shown a red card for stepping on the back of Nigeria's Michelle Alozie.
After a VAR review, the 21-year-old received a red card, replacing her initial yellow card, making James the first Lioness sent off during Sarina Wiegman's tenure. As per FIFA regulations, a one-game suspension is imposed on players, resulting in James' absence from England's quarter-final clash against Colombia on Saturday.
If England reaches the semi-final, she will be unable to participate due to FIFA's extended suspension. James expressed her apologies on social media after Alozie had personally responded to the incident, stating her deep admiration for Lauren James.

The Chelsea striker responded by expressing his sincere affection and admiration: "I extend all my love and respect to you. I deeply apologize for the incident that occurred. Furthermore, I want to convey my apologies to our loyal England supporters and my fellow teammates. Having the opportunity to play alongside you all and represent our country is the utmost privilege, and I assure you that I will use this experience as a valuable lesson for personal growth and improvement."
The dismissal mirrored the red cards received by David Beckham in the 1998 World Cup and Wayne Rooney in the 2006 World Cup. Both Beckham and Rooney were standout young stars for England, and their tournament performances were halted by a moment of irrational behavior.
However, according to England boss Wiegman, James, the 21-year-old player, did not have any intention for the incident to occur, despite being overcome by emotions.
After the game on Monday, she explained, "It was a brief moment, occurring later in the game when fatigue had set in for the players. Being relatively inexperienced on this stage, she had performed admirably. In that split-second, her emotions got the better of her, although it's important to note that she never intended to harm anyone. In fact, she is the kindest person I have ever known."
"However, occurrences like these are inevitable and unchangeable. It serves as a valuable lesson for her to learn, although it was unintentional on her part.
"Occasionally, individuals find themselves immersed in a highly intense and emotional situation where, in a mere moment, their emotions get the better of them."
