Germany's unbeaten streak in the Women's World Cup group stage ends after 1995 as Colombia secures a thrilling 2-1 victory in Sydney Manuela Vanegas' injury-time header seals the win, following Linda Caicedo's brilliant goal Exciting times ahead in the tournament! #WWC

In a thrilling match, Germany experienced their first Women's World Cup group stage loss since 1995. Colombia, the new leaders of Group H, emerged victorious with a 2-1 victory over Germany in Sydney. The winning goal came from Manuela Vanegas' injury-time header, following a remarkable goal by Linda Caicedo. The defender's decisive header not only settled the game but also brought her country to the brink of advancing to the knockout stage. Despite the setback, Alexandra Popp managed to salvage a late 89th-minute penalty goal, securing a draw for Germany, who are two-time champions.

However, Vanegas delivered a surprising twist towards the end, leading to exuberant celebrations amongst the Colombian fans, who outnumbered the Sydney Football Stadium crowd.

Believing that they had earned a draw, the Germans were confident after Colombia's goalkeeper, Catalina Perez, was penalized for fouling Lena Oberdorf inside the penalty area.

Popp, who scored twice in her country's 6-0 rout of Morocco in their opening game of the tournament, fired straight down the middle to level the game.

The crowd, who had passionately cheered on Colombia throughout, were disappointed by the turn of events when Caicedo scored in the 52nd minute. Earlier in the week, the Real Madrid teenager had experienced a health scare, but managed to produce a remarkable moment of magic to score her second goal of the tournament.

It was all the more special coming after she had dropped to the ground holding her chest in training during the week.

Linda Caicedo celebrates he stunning opening goal against Germany

Caicedo netted a long-range goal in the 2-0 victory over South Korea on Tuesday. However, unlike the previous goal which resulted from a mistake by goalkeeper Yoon Young-geul, this time it was purely a display of individual brilliance.

Having received the ball just inside the box following a corner, she skillfully maneuvered past two German defenders with a lightning-fast step, creating enough space for herself. She then elegantly curled a shot into the top corner of the net.

Caicedo and her teammates sprinted towards the corner, drawn by the roaring crowd.

Germany, renowned for their consistent advancement from the group stage in the Women's World Cup, are anticipated to triumph over South Korea in their final Group H match. However, they are likely to secure the second position.

The runners-up from the previous year's Euros had the opportunity to take the lead in the first half. Popp was at fault for missing the target with a close-range volley just before halftime.

Before that, Lina Magull had a chance to test Perez from a short distance but mis-kicked, resulting in a wasted opportunity.
