Landmark Victory: Pro-Russian Politician Sweeps Slovakia's Parliamentary Election, Shaking Up National Politics

Slovakia's parliamentary election sees the victory of the party led by former Prime Minister Robert Fico, who has been openly supportive of Russia However, to form a government, they will require a coalition partner

Slovakia's former Prime Minister Robert Fico's party, known for its pro-Russian stance, has emerged victorious in the country's parliamentary election. However, forming a coalition government will be necessary to govern. According to preliminary results released by Slovakia's Statistical Office, Fico's SMER party has obtained 23.3% of the vote, with over 99% of districts counted.

The Progressive Slovakia (PS) party emerged as the runner-up, securing 17% of the total votes. The outcome for SMER, although not a landslide, surpassed expectations. Recent opinion polls indicated a close competition between SMER and PS.

Hlas, formed as a splinter group from SMER due to internal conflicts, secured third place with 15% of the vote.

With seven political parties exceeding the 5% threshold required for parliamentary entry, coalition talks are likely to involve multiple participants and may be protracted and chaotic.
