Slovakia's former Prime Minister Robert Fico's party, known for its pro-Russian stance, has emerged victorious in the country's parliamentary election. However, forming a coalition government will be necessary to govern. According to preliminary results released by Slovakia's Statistical Office, Fico's SMER party has obtained 23.3% of the vote, with over 99% of districts counted.
The Progressive Slovakia (PS) party emerged as the runner-up, securing 17% of the total votes. The outcome for SMER, although not a landslide, surpassed expectations. Recent opinion polls indicated a close competition between SMER and PS.
Hlas, formed as a splinter group from SMER due to internal conflicts, secured third place with 15% of the vote.
With seven political parties exceeding the 5% threshold required for parliamentary entry, coalition talks are likely to involve multiple participants and may be protracted and chaotic.
