Kylie Jenner is opening up about the difficulties of starting a makeup line from scratch, revealing even mom Kris Jenner had her doubts.
Kylie recently sat down with Jennifer Lawrence for an interview published on Monday, November 27 in Interview Magazine. During their conversation, Kylie opened up about the challenges she faced when starting her successful makeup line, Kylie Cosmetics.
"Proving people wrong was a challenge, as was building it from the ground up," Kylie shared.
"It was just me and my mom, entering into a field we knew nothing about. We were starting from scratch, with no help. My mom even joked that I might end up stuck with lip kits in my garage forever," Kylie remembered. "We started out by ordering 5,000 of each color; that was the minimum. My mom warned me, 'You better be prepared, Kylie, because you might have a lot of lip kits in your garage for life, so you better love these colors.'"
The launch of Kylie Cosmetics on November 30, 2015, was an instant success, with all lip kits selling out within one minute and the website crashing from the high volume of customers. The company has since generated over $900 million. In response to this rapid success, Kylie had to strategize on how to sustain the company's growth, stating, "We were like, OK, how do we do this? How do we make these faster and better?" in an interview with Lawrence.
"We explored California in my mom's car, visiting various factories," Kylie recounted. "Finding the right manufacturer was challenging for our new company. Growing in the public eye was tough, leaving no room for errors. But it was a positive experience - successful and the best time of my life."
In November, Kylie made the transition from makeup to clothing with the launch of her new clothing line, Khy.
“What was the hardest part of transitioning from the beauty industry to the fashion industry?” Lawrence asked the reality star.

Check out this deal. "It wasn’t that hard,” Kylie responded. “I’ve always loved both, and I think they go hand in hand. Especially when I’m doing red carpets or picking major events and outfits, I think that the makeup and the hair can make or break your look or just give it different energy or take it to another level.”
“I agree,” said Lawrence. “It’s a symphony. It all has to work together. And you just have that eye.”
