Preserving History and Culture
In addition to its luxurious accommodations and wildlife experiences, Kruger Shalati: The Train on the Bridge is dedicated to preserving the history and culture of South Africa’s railway heritage. The hotel’s unique concept of transforming train carriages into modern suites pays homage to the early days of the park when steam trains were essential for tourist access to Kruger. Through the restoration of the bridge and the repurposing of historic train carriages, the hotel offers a blend of luxury and nostalgia, inviting guests to immerse themselves in the cultural and historical significance of the railway.
The Motsamayi Tourism Group, which owns the hotel, also operates Kruger Station, located south of the bridge. The station is home to the last train to operate in the park, showcasing the cultural significance of steam trains and historical rail travel. The group’s CEO, Jerry Mabena, expresses a vision for the re-emergence of the culture of historical trains, hinting at the possibility of a future moving steam train experience, further preserving and celebrating South Africa’s rich railway heritage.
