Kristen Wiig was honored this weekend as she hosted "Saturday Night Live" for the fifth time, making her a member of the prestigious five-timers club. She received some assistance from a star-studded lineup during the show.
Matt Damon, Ryan Gosling, Jon Hamm, Martin Short, Paul Rudd, Will Forte, Fred Armisen, and the iconic "SNL" creator Lorne Michaels all made appearances on the episode to present Wiig with her exclusive dark blue velvet members-only jacket.
Wiig was thrilled to receive the honor, but her excitement was cut short when Rudd, wearing one of the jackets, playfully mentioned a rumor he heard. He asked if she would be doing a sketch with awesome celebrity cameos for hosting the show five times, and if there was a script he could check out for it.
She shyly responded, "Oh, I'm sorry, I don't think we're doing that kind of sketch..."
Paula Pell, a former writer for "SNL," joined the event and playfully teased Kristen Wiig for being so excited about her jacket. She joked that the jackets are given out to everyone like free maxi pads.
Next, Matt Damon made an appearance wearing a five-timer jacket, even though he has only hosted the show twice. He explained that according to Lorne, his first hosting gig was so good that it counted for three times, and his second time counted as two. By his calculation, he proudly declared, "that's five, baby."
Wiig playfully teased Damon about receiving a jacket for hosting only twice, questioning the fairness of the situation. She jokingly asked if she had earned her jacket and if it held any significance anymore.
To add to the humor, Hamm, Forte, Short, and Armisen made an appearance, all sporting five-timers club jackets. This sight further frustrated Wiig, as none of them had actually hosted the show five times like she and Damon had.
Forte mentioned that they had hosted together five times. Wiig, feeling deflated, expressed that her initiation didn't feel as special anymore. However, Damon came back on stage to reassure her, saying she should be proud of herself. He humorously added that Wiig was the youngest member, though Wiig pointed out that Emma Stone had joined more recently. Damon then playfully suggested that Wiig was the first woman to join.
All of Wiig’s special guests eventually joined her on stage to sing a song. Wiig sang, "And there’s one thing I know is true, I wouldn’t be here without all of you." She was then interrupted once again, this time by next week’s host, Gosling.
Gosling, the “Barbie” star, appeared onstage wearing a jacket next to Michaels and expressed confusion. He asked Michaels if he was sure about the jacket, to which Michaels nodded affirmatively. Gosling jokingly mentioned that he hadn't even hosted three times yet, so it seemed unfair to him.
Gosling then hurried over to Wiig and happily presented her with her very own jacket. He even took the time to lint roll it for her.
Wiig now joins a prestigious club that includes Rudd, Stone, Tom Hanks, Steve Martin, Tina Fey, Will Ferrell, Ben Affleck, and Melissa McCarthy, among others.
The star known as "Palm Royale" was part of the cast of "SNL" for seven years from 2005 to 2012. After leaving as a regular, she came back to host in 2013, 2016, and twice in 2020.
Ryan Gosling will be hosting the upcoming episode of "SNL" on April 13, with musical guest Chris Stapleton.
