Starting January, visitors to Kenya from any country will no longer need a visa, as announced by President William Ruto on December 12th. The government has created a digital platform for travelers to obtain an electronic travel authorization beforehand, eliminating the need for a traditional visa application process.
"There will be no need for anyone from any part of the world to go through the hassle of applying for a visa to visit Kenya," he announced in Nairobi during a ceremony celebrating 60 years of independence from Britain. Ruto has been a strong supporter of visa-free travel across Africa.
During a conference in the Republic of Congo in October, he announced that by the end of 2023, citizens of African countries would no longer need a visa to visit Kenya. The tourism industry is crucial to Kenya's economy, providing beach holidays along its Indian Ocean coastline and wildlife safaris inland.
"Kenya has a simple message to humanity: Welcome Home!" he said.
