Article Overview
Jujutsu Kaisen is an action-packed anime with intense fights, but also showcases a witty sense of humor, breaking up the intense action with lighthearted moments.
Season 1 was filled with numerous hilarious moments, with one standout being the amusing exchange between Yuji and Todo in episode 19. Regrettably, the English dub fell short in capturing the comedic brilliance of the original Japanese version.
The scene became a sensation among the Jujutsu Kaisen community because of the clever banter and the voice actor's choice to add an English accent for comedic impact. Sadly, the localization team was unable to fully replicate the joke in the dubbed version, resulting in some viewers missing out on this uproarious moment.
Jujutsu Kaisen is a highly action-packed shonen anime that stands out for its unique power system. Despite this, the series also incorporates elements from other genres, showcasing an impressive sense of wit and humor. The witty banter between characters like Gojo and Nanami, as well as the teasing of Megumi by Itadori, effectively balances the intense action with light-hearted moments.
While Season 1 had many hilarious scenes, particularly before the introduction of intense and emotionally charged story arcs like the Shibuya Incident, the animation team managed to bring one of the funniest moments between Yuji and Todo to life. Unfortunately, the English dub fell short in capturing the same magic.
Todo and Yuji's Bonding Experience Is The Funniest Moment In The Show
Jujutsu Kaisen Season 1, Episode 19: "Black Flash"
In episode 19 of season 1 of Jujutsu Kaisen, Todo Aoi and Yuji Itadori confronted Hanami, a special-grade curse who had infiltrated the school. Todo, determined to help Itadori become skilled in cursed energy, instructed him to fight Hanami alone until he successfully executed a Black Flash. Todo amusingly communicated in English throughout the battle, using phrases like "My besto friendo!" This tongue-in-cheek dialogue amidst a high-stakes life-or-death clash added a comedic element, making it one of the most entertaining moments in Jujutsu Kaisen.
The scene became even more outrageous when Subaru Kimaru, the voice actor of Todo, who is fluent in English, decided to exaggerate an accent for comedic effect. This decision was widely appreciated by fans and quickly turned into a viral meme within the Jujutsu Kaisen community. However, English-speaking fans watching the dubbed version didn't have the same experience. It wasn't because the voice actor intentionally left out the accent; he simply couldn't replicate it. Unfortunately, the localization team faced a significant challenge in recreating the original joke due to its dialectic nature.
It's unfortunate that some missed out on the most hilarious moment in the series due to the dubbed version not having any faults. However, it's great to see that the cast and staff of Jujutsu Kaisen had creative freedom to enhance the show, considering its immense popularity as a franchise. The upcoming Shibuya Incident Arc promises another exciting collaboration between Itadori and Todo, and viewers are eagerly anticipating their entertaining dynamic. Editor's P/S
As an enthusiastic fan of Jujutsu Kaisen, I couldn't agree more with the article's critique of the English dub missing out on one of the show's most hilarious jokes. The scene in question, where Todo and Yuji confront Hanami, is one of my absolute favorites in the entire series. The original Japanese version is so funny because of Todo's over-the-top English accent, which adds an unexpected layer of humor to the intense fight scene.
The English dub, unfortunately, falls flat in this scene. The voice actor for Todo does a good job overall, but he doesn't quite capture the same level of comedic timing and delivery as the Japanese voice actor. As a result, the scene loses a lot of its impact and humor. Overall, I think the English dub of Jujutsu Kaisen is well done, but it's a shame that they couldn't quite stick the landing on this particular scene. I highly recommend watching the original Japanese version with subtitles if you want to experience the full hilarity of this moment.
