Joy Ride director Adele Lim has responded to a viral review of her new movie. The raunchy comedy follows best friends Audrey and Lolo as they embark on a wild adventure through China with Audrey's famous former roommate Kat and Lolo's eccentric cousin Deadeye in search of Audrey's birth mother. The movie, which boasts a predominantly Asian-American cast, recently faced criticism from Lights Camera Jackson, a controversial critic who claimed in a tweet that the film "objectifies men" and "targets white people", sparking widespread outrage on social media. Taking to Twitter just days before the official release date of Joy Ride on July 7, Lim humorously remarked in a quote tweet that she should make a T-shirt featuring the phrase "objectifies men, targets white people". As of now, her response has garnered over 1,500 retweets and 16,000 likes. Check out her reply below.
Joy Ride's Reviews Are Otherwise Overwhelmingly Positive
Despite receiving a negative racially-charged review, Joy Ride has received high praise from other critics. Currently, on Rotten Tomatoes, the movie boasts an impressive critic score of 93 percent based on nearly 70 reviews. This score holds significant statistical value, indicating that the movie will likely receive the "Certified Fresh" label.
Additionally, Joy Ride maintains its success, attaining a solid score of 81 on Metacritic. However, it remains uncertain how the movie will fare at the box office. Current projections suggest that it will secure a position around No. 3 on the domestic chart during its opening weekend, trailing franchise titles Insidious: The Red Door and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.
Following Jennifer Lawrence's movie No Hard Feelings, Joy Ride is currently playing in theaters. No Hard Feelings is on track to becoming the highest-grossing original R-rated comedy since 2019. Although Joy Ride doesn't feature a well-known A-list actor, it has the potential to leverage the renewed interest in its genre and achieve a successful box office run if it generates positive word-of-mouth buzz similar to its favorable critical ratings.
