Jon Rahm, currently holding the No. 3 spot in the world rankings and reigning Masters champion, is reportedly on the verge of departing the PGA Tour to join the Saudi-backed LIV Golf series, as reported by the Wall Street Journal and ESPN. According to sources familiar with the situation, the Journal stated that an agreement is expected to be made public later this week, as long as negotiations remain on track.
Later on Thursday, ESPN confirmed that Rahm had indeed decided to depart from the PGA Tour to join the breakaway tour. According to unnamed sources, the three-year agreement also involved Rahm obtaining a stake in a new LIV Golf team.
CNN has made several attempts to obtain statements from LIV Golf and Rahm's representatives in order to gain a better understanding of the 29-year-old Spaniard's intentions.
Rahm's potential move to the Saudi-backed professional golf tour comes at a crucial time for both the PGA Tour and LIV. Both parties are aiming to finalize the proposed framework for their collaboration by December 31. The announcement of the proposed partnership was made in June.
