Pirates of the Caribbean actor Vince Lozano discusses Johnny Depp's potential comeback as Jack Sparrow in the franchise. Directed by Gore Verbinski and based on the Disney World attraction, the first film was released in 2003. Depp's portrayal of Sparrow was highly acclaimed, leading him to appear in four sequels.
As the question of Depp's return remains uncertain, Lozano, who played pirate Jacoby in the original film, shares his views in a recent interview with MovieWeb. While he doubts that it will actually happen, Lozano believes that audiences would welcome the decision. Read the actor's full statement below:
Will Johnny Depp Return To Pirates Of The Caribbean?
I believe he should be given another opportunity to portray Jack, but unfortunately, it seems unlikely. Numerous rumors and speculations can be heard. However, the audience remains devoted. As someone who attends various pirate conventions, I have witnessed firsthand the immense enthusiasm and admiration for Johnny among the vast subculture of individuals who enjoy dressing up as pirates.
Although 2017's Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales was not a complete failure at the box office, it did indicate a decline in interest for the franchise. The movie earned less domestically than any other film in the series and its worldwide earnings only surpassed the first installment. Moreover, the film received mostly negative reviews, currently holding the franchise's lowest rating of 30% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Pirates of the Caribbean 6 has undergone multiple iterations, one of which involved Margot Robbie leading a female-focused film. This decision aligned with the controversies surrounding Johnny Depp's personal life, particularly his court battle with ex-wife Amber Heard, which negatively impacted his career prospects in Hollywood. Now that the court battle has concluded with a verdict mostly favoring Depp, there is a possibility of him reprising his role as Sparrow, especially since Robbie's film appears to be on hold.
While Disney executives have been evasive regarding Depp's potential return, using the term "noncommittal," longstanding franchise producer Jerry Bruckheimer has expressed a clear interest in bringing him back. However, Depp himself seems content working on projects outside the traditional Hollywood system, such as the film Jeanne du Barry. Therefore, whether Sparrow will make a comeback in a new Pirates of the Caribbean movie remains uncertain.
