J.K. Rowling expressed her disappointment towards Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and other celebrities who do not support her views on transgender issues. Despite facing backlash for her remarks in the past, the Harry Potter author shared an article on Wednesday, April 10th, discussing the medical evidence supporting transitioning children.
A fan responded to Rowling's post by expressing their expectation for Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson to publicly apologize to her, believing that she would forgive them. In response, Rowling, aged 58, hinted that forgiveness was not on the table for those who spoke against her beliefs.
In a message through X, the author stated, "Unfortunately, it's not that simple." Rowling pointed out that celebrities who supported movements that aimed to diminish women's rights and endorsed the transitioning of minors should redirect their apologies to detransitioners and women who rely on single-sex spaces for safety.
Radcliffe, 34, and Watson, 33, began their Hollywood careers by starring in the film adaptations of Rowling’s popular Harry Potter books. Despite their initial connection to Rowling, both actors publicly criticized her controversial statements in June 2020.
In a heartfelt essay, Radcliffe, a strong supporter of the LGBTQ+ community and a long-time contributor to The Trevor Project, expressed his disagreement with Rowling’s views. He emphasized that transgender women are women, opposing any statements that deny their identity and dignity. Radcliffe cited advice from healthcare professionals as more credible on this topic than opinions from either himself or Rowling.

Watson expressed her support for the transgender community in the midst of Rowling's controversy. The actress stated, "Trans people deserve to live their lives without constant questioning or denial of their identity. I want my transgender followers to know that I, along with many others, see you, respect you, and love you for who you are." Watson also mentioned donating to @Mermaids_Gender and @mamacash, and encouraged others to do the same if they are able. She ended her message with "Happy #PRIDE2020 Sending love x."
Several Harry Potter alumni, including Rupert Grint, Bonnie Wright, Eddie Redmayne, Ralph Fiennes, and Helena Bonham Carter, have also shown their support for the trans community, along with Watson and Radcliffe.
Despite facing backlash and losing support, Rowling remains outspoken about her controversial beliefs. Recently, she criticized the Hate Crime and Public Order Act in the U.K., challenging the police to arrest her for her views.
"According to X, if accurately describing biological sex is considered a crime in Scotland, it means freedom of speech and belief no longer exist. Even though I am currently not in the country, if my words are deemed offensive under the new law, I am prepared to be arrested when I come back to the place known as the birthplace of the Scottish Enlightenment."
