Jessie James Decker's Refreshing Take on Body Image: Embracing Health and Happiness Without Restrictions

Country singer Jessie James Decker addresses body image criticism, emphasizing that it's not solely about being skinny Opening up exclusively to Us, she discusses overcoming trolls and her healthy approach towards not restricting herself

Jessie James Decker has a reputation for standing up to critics who shame her body, but her self-assurance wasn't easily attained.

In an exclusive interview for the latest edition of We, the 35-year-old candidly discussed her evolving relationship with her body, acknowledging the significant changes brought about by motherhood. (She has three children, Vivianne aged 9, Eric Jr. aged 7, and Forrest aged 5, with her husband Eric Decker.)

"Your body undergoes significant and rapid changes during pregnancy. I personally faced challenges in coping with these changes," she shared with Us. "Throughout my life, I had always been petite. However, during my first pregnancy, I gained 55 pounds, which caused immense discomfort. I experienced constant pain in my back, suffered from tendonitis, and even developed carpal tunnel syndrome."

Decker reminisced about the lengthy period it took her to shed the weight she had gained prior to giving birth to Vivianne. Her honest and open approach to discussing her own postpartum journey stems from her understanding of the struggles women face during this phase.

After giving birth, Decker didn't experience the common phenomenon of losing weight effortlessly while breastfeeding. However, she wants other mothers to understand that it's perfectly fine to embrace this change. Decker shared with Us, "You have just completed the incredible journey of carrying a baby in your body, and it's completely okay if the weight doesn't magically disappear. It took nine months to grow and it may take just as long, if not longer, to shed it. So, instead of fixating on losing weight, focus on the miracle of your baby and cherish this precious time."

Decker experienced some challenges while adjusting to the significant changes her body went through after giving birth. However, she has adopted a different mindset and now chooses to focus on other aspects. She emphasized that she loves to eat and does not limit herself from enjoying food. Decker accepts that she has gained more weight than what may be considered optimal for her height and weight, recognizing that it is a natural part of life. As a result, rather than focusing solely on losing weight, Decker has dedicated her efforts to becoming more physically fit and building strength.

“I desired to regain my physical vigor as it empowers me to overcome any challenge,” she conveyed. “It extends beyond mere slimness; I take immense pleasure in sculpting my muscles. When I acquire a toned physique with well-defined muscles, I experience an unparalleled sense of strength.”

Jessie James Decker understands that it is normal for one's weight to vary and she has no desire to adhere to a rigid diet. As a self-professed food enthusiast with Italian roots, she simply cannot settle for a diet solely focused on lettuce. The allure of indulging in pastas and bread is too irresistible for her.

Dealing with online haters adds another layer of difficulty to the journey of self-love. In July 2021, Decker became emotional while watching a video that revealed hurtful comments about her weight on a Reddit page.

Reflecting on the experience, she shared via her Instagram Story, "It forces you to pause and question your own worth. It's painful. I've always been a strong and confident person, but it does sting a bit to have people dissect every aspect of my being. ... We all need to strive for improvement."

Decker expressed gratitude to her supportive fans for boosting her confidence and the memory has stayed with her ever since.

"I wanted to convey that I can relate to people in similar situations," she shared with Us. "I wanted to show vulnerability. That's why I enjoy sharing. When I receive direct messages, I realize there is an incredible community of women and I want them to know that it's tough, I understand them, and I am going through it alongside them. I believe that is crucial."
