Jennifer Aniston and Matthew Perry were more than co-stars on the popular television show. They portrayed the characters Rachel Green and Chandler Bing on the NBC series for ten years. Aniston and Perry maintained a strong friendship after the show ended, but tragically, Perry passed away in October 2023 at the age of 54 from a suspected drowning.
"We are absolutely devastated by the loss of Matthew. We were more than just colleagues; we are a family," Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, and David Schwimmer stated jointly to We at the time. "There are no words to express our grief, but for now, we need time to mourn and come to terms with this incomprehensible loss."
The statement went on to say, "We will share more in time, when we are able. Right now, our thoughts and love are with Matty's family, his friends, and all those who loved him around the world."

A Different Sight on Set
During his time playing the charismatic Chandler on Friends, Perry's costar Aniston saw him as more than just his character and described him as "one of the most sensitive people" she had ever met, explaining that "His feelings get hurt. He cares what people think. He even bruises easily." This was mentioned in a 1997 Entertainment Weekly profile.

An Unrequited Crush
Before the pair began working together, Perry met Aniston and asked her out. Aniston rejected him and opted for the twosome to remain platonic.
Upon her arrival, I would greet her with a simple, 'Hey, good to see you.' Then I would retreat to my dressing room and think, 'I'll never be able to be with her.' But really, how could anyone not have a crush on Jennifer Aniston, you know? At one point, I had to tell myself, 'All right, that's enough.'

Coming to His Aid
In his memoir, "Friends, Lovers and the Big Terrible Thing," Perry openly admitted to battling substance abuse throughout his time on the popular series. Perry disclosed that Aniston had confronted him about his struggles, with her mentioning, "'I know you're drinking.' ... 'How can you tell?' I said. I never worked drunk," he wrote. "‘We can smell it,' she said, in a kind of weird but loving way, and the plural ‘we’ hit me like a sledgehammer."
Perry acknowledged Aniston for her consistent support during his challenging times, attributing her as the one who reached out the most. "I'm truly grateful to her for that," Perry expressed to Diane Sawyer in October 2022.

Their Sweet Texts
After Perry’s passing, Aniston shared a series of text messages between herself and her former costar.
Perry sent a text to Aniston expressing, "Making you laugh just made my day. It made my day :)," along with a throwback photo of them together. Aniston responded, "Awww the first of THOUSANDS of times ... "
Saying Goodbye
Aniston wrote a heartfelt tribute to Perry after his passing, expressing the profound impact of his loss on her and the rest of their close-knit group. In an Instagram post, she shared, "Having to bid farewell to our Matty has brought a whirlwind of emotions unlike any I've felt before. We all encounter loss in our lives, whether it's the loss of a loved one or the loss of love itself. Embracing this grief enables us to cherish the moments of happiness and appreciation for having loved someone so deeply. And we loved him deeply. He was an integral part of who we are. We were always the six of us. This chosen family forever altered the course of our lives and our collective journey."
She continued, "Matty was absolutely certain that making people laugh was his true passion. He once admitted that if he didn't hear laughter, he felt like his life was at stake. He truly thrived on bringing joy to others, and he certainly accomplished that. He never failed to bring laughter to all of us. And we laughed heartily."

Inside His Final Moments
"He was happy and healthy, having quit smoking and getting in shape. That's all I know," Aniston told Variety in December 2023 of Perry's mindset before his death. "I was texting with him that morning, funny Matty. He wasn't in pain or struggling. He was genuinely happy."
She went on to say, "I want people to know he was in really good health and on a path to getting even healthier. He was working so hard, despite being dealt a tough hand. I miss him dearly, we all do. He made us laugh so much."
