The original 9 to 5 movie featured Judy (Fonda), Violet (Lily), and Doralee (Dolly Parton) seeking revenge on their sexist boss, played by Dabney Coleman. Parton, 78, also sang the theme song for the movie's soundtrack.

Fonda shared her experience developing the movie 9 to 5 during an appearance on The Kelly Clarkson Show in May 2022. She mentioned that at that time, the movie was still in the casting process and neither her friendship with Lily Tomlin nor Dolly Parton had been established yet.

Fonda explained how she discovered Lily Tomlin while she was performing her one-woman show 'Appearing Nightly' in downtown L.A. Fonda attended the show alone and was greatly impressed by Tomlin's talent, feeling completely captivated by her performance.

After witnessing Tomlin's comedic skills on stage, Fonda realized that she couldn't imagine making a movie about secretaries without Tomlin on board. Tomlin also recalled their first meeting, mentioning how she was a big fan of Fonda and even sported a hairstyle reminiscent of Fonda's character in the movie 'Klute'. Meeting Fonda backstage was a thrilling experience for Tomlin, who admitted to feeling starstruck in her presence.
