Jake Borelli, aged 33, is said to be leaving Grey's Anatomy after being on the show for seven seasons. We has reached out to ABC for comment.
While Borelli has not addressed his exit at this time, the news made headlines during a major milestone for the actor: his birthday.
He posted on Instagram on Monday, celebrating his 33rd birthday with a video of him blowing out candles.
Grey's Anatomy, the longest-running primetime medical drama on TV, is now in its 20th season. The season finale is set to air on Thursday, May 30th.
ABC revealed in April that Grey’s Anatomy will be back for season 21 in 2024. There have been no updates on the casting so far. However, the show’s creator, Shonda Rhimes, expressed her excitement.
Rhimes mentioned in a statement, “The dedication and love from Grey’s Anatomy fans have brought us to an incredible 21st season, and I am extremely thankful. Meg Marinis’ storytelling has been a true blessing, keeping the show fresh, engaging, and full of life. I am eager to see what she has in store for the upcoming season.”

Borelli started on the medical drama in season 14 with a recurring role, but later on, he became part of the main cast in the following two seasons.
Throughout the years, Borelli's character, Levi, has gained popularity among fans. Levi started as an intern at Grey Sloan Memorial and eventually advanced to the position of senior resident. In his role as senior resident, he has been mentoring new interns on their medical paths.
In season 15, Borelli played a significant role in an LGBTQIA+ storyline. Levi started a relationship with Dr. Nico Kim, the first openly gay male character in the series. After the episode where Nico and Levi shared their first kiss aired, Borelli publicly came out.
Borelli took to Instagram in November 2018 to express his feelings about the episode. He shared, “As a gay guy myself, tonight’s episode was so special to me. This is exactly the kind of story I craved as a young gay kid growing up in Ohio. It amazes me that I get to portray Dr. Levi Schmitt as he navigates his own sexuality this season on Grey’s Anatomy. His vulnerability and bravery inspire me every day, and I hope he can do the same for you.”
He continued, “To all of you who feel like little Levis out there, know that I do too, that you are seen, and that we’re all in this together. And to everyone who has supported me over the years, I can’t thank you enough, and I love you more than all the stars.”
While Landi, 31, departed the series in 2022, he briefly returned for season 20. When Levi ran into his ex-boyfriend it was revealed that Nico was in a new relationship and expecting a child via a surrogate.
Editor's P/S:
Jake Borelli's departure from Grey's Anatomy marks a significant loss for the show. His character, Dr. Levi Schmitt, has become a fan favorite over the past seven seasons, and his LGBTQIA+ storyline has been both groundbreaking and inspiring. It's disappointing to see Borelli leave, but it's understandable that he may want to pursue other opportunities after such a long run on the show.
Borelli's exit also leaves a void in the show's diversity. As the first openly gay male character on Grey's Anatomy, Levi has been an important representation for LGBTQIA+ viewers. His departure means that the show will have to work even harder to ensure that its representation is inclusive and authentic.
