Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith chose not to sign a prenuptial agreement when they got married. According to Pinkett Smith, their decision was based on the belief that weddings can be overly romanticized. She explained that they wanted to have a genuine moment where they looked into each other's eyes, acknowledged that there would be challenges in their marriage, and promised to work through them together. This, she felt, made a prenup unnecessary, as they were committed to finding solutions and avoiding divorce.
She continued, "We made that promise to each other, without the extravagance of a bridal wedding. We were simply sitting on a log in his mother's backyard, just saying 'Hey.' We had to truly consider the possibility of not being together."
Pinkett Smith and the 55-year-old Oscar winner began their relationship in 1995, shortly after Smith's divorce from ex-wife Sheree Zampino. Two years later, Pinkett Smith and Smith, who has a 30-year-old son named Trey with Zampino, got married in 1997. They went on to have two children together, Jaden (25) and Willow (22).
After being married for twenty years, Pinkett Smith and Smith decided to separate in private.
Speaking on the Today show on Wednesday, October 11, Pinkett Smith expressed, "I believe that by 2016, we were simply fatigued from our efforts. I think we both remained fixated on our idealized versions of each other."
Pinkett Smith explained to host Hoda Kotb that although she and Smith currently live separately, they have not begun the process of filing for divorce. She mentioned that they are not ready yet and are still trying to figure out how to navigate their partnership together. The challenge lies in understanding how to present this dynamic to the public, as they have not yet determined this.
Despite their separation, Pinkett Smith and Smith have continued to make public appearances as a couple. They were seen together at the 2022 Oscars, where Smith won the award for Best Actor in a Leading Role for his performance in "King Richard." It was during this event that he infamously smacked Chris Rock for making a joke about Pinkett Smith's shaved head, as she suffers from alopecia.
After Smith's slapping incident gained widespread attention, he publicly apologized for his actions and voluntarily resigned from the Academy. Subsequently, the organization imposed a 10-year ban on him from participating in future events. In response to the situation, Pinkett Smith expressed that it brought them closer together.
She stated in an interview with Parade, "In good times, everyone wants to be around and share in the glamour. But what about when things take a turn for the worse? What happens when the people who love you need your support, and when you need the people you love?" She added, "That was a pivotal moment for us, where we realized that no matter what challenges arise, we are in this journey together. I reassured him, 'I am by your side, regardless of what may be happening.' It was a moment where we both recognized the strength of our bond."
Pinkett Smith further gushed that she is “very lucky” that there is someone in her life who is “willing” to stand by her side during “tough times.”
