Jada Pinkett Smith and Will Smith's present relationship status has left fans puzzled.
During the promotion of her latest memoir, Worthy, the 52-year-old Pinkett Smith revealed a shocking revelation that she and the 55-year-old Smith had been quietly separated since 2016, a whole six years before Smith's infamous incident of slapping Chris Rock at the Oscars. Pinkett Smith is now providing clarification that she and Smith have been diligently working towards repairing their relationship.
“We don't have any legal divorce proceedings,” she informed Today host Hoda Kotb on Monday, October 16. “We are diligently working on rekindling our relationship and restoring it to a life partnership.”
She clarified that she has no intention of “seeking another wonderful love,” and further commented, “At this moment, we find ourselves in a profound phase of healing. Our focus is solely on repairing the bond between us.”
Pinkett Smith acknowledged that she entered her marriage with Smith harboring certain preconceived notions that ultimately hindered her ability to see him for who he truly is. She eventually came to the realization that he is not capable of being the flawless, idealized husband she had envisioned.
She further added, "I must learn to embrace him as the fallible human being he is. In turn, he accepts and loves me for the imperfect human I am, and together, we strive to nurture a love rooted in acceptance."
One day prior to Pinkett Smith's latest update, Smith seemed to respond to the constant media attention surrounding their marriage. He posted an Instagram video of himself on a boat with the caption, "Notifications off :)."

The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air star also expressed in a statement to The New York Times that his former wife's memoir served as an awakening for him. He acknowledged that after being together for more than half of his life, he had become emotionally blind to her hidden complexities and subtle charms.
Despite their current separation, Pinkett Smith shared with Kotb earlier this month that they are actively working on finding a way to effectively collaborate as partners. They have yet to determine how to communicate this to the public.
One year after getting married, the couple had their first child, Jaden, in 1998, followed by their daughter Willow in 2000. They also co-parent Smith's son Trey, who he shares with his ex-wife Sheree Zampino.
Despite experiencing various challenges in their relationship over the years, singer August Alsina alleged in July 2020 that he had a brief romantic involvement with Pinkett Smith that was approved by Smith. Initially denying the musician's claims, Pinkett Smith later acknowledged that the "entanglement" occurred in 2015.
“We made the decision to take a break and give ourselves space to find individual happiness,” Smith revealed on a July 2020 installment of his spouse's previous Facebook Watch show, Red Table Talk. "I truly believed our relationship might come to an end."
