Boimler and his away team have been assigned the important task of revamping the power grid on the planet Corazonia. This ambitious project involves the delicate transportation of highly unstable components. The magnitude of the instability in these Corazonian generator parts is such that mishandling them could result in a catastrophic detonation. However, an unexpected complication arises when Captain Carol Freeman (Dawnn Lewis) unintentionally triggers climate chaos while trying to update the software of Vexilon, the planet's benevolent computer responsible for controlling its unique climate. Fearing for the safety of his ensigns, Boimler courageously takes it upon himself to independently manage the transfer of the precarious components.

Despite the fine line between bravery and stupidity, Boimler's understanding of responsibility and teamwork allows him to embrace his command position with greater ease. Unfortunately, it is his comfort in this role that leads him to sacrifice his life in order to save his away team by shutting down Vexilon's generator, resulting in a catastrophic explosion. Tragically, Boimler falls victim to the estimated fatality rate for an officer's first away mission in command. However, thanks to the intervention of Dr. T'ana (Gillian Vigman), Boimler joins the ranks of a long list of Star Trek characters who have been resurrected.Star Trek: Lower Decks adds to the ongoing joke within the Star Trek universe that death is a common occurrence for Starfleet officers. This means that Boimler has now experienced this significant event and has completed the rite of passage. Boimler joins an esteemed group of Star Trek characters who have also faced this fate, including Captain Spock (Leonard Nimoy) in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, Lt. Worf (Michael Dorn) and his multiple deaths in Star Trek: The Next Generation, and Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) who has died more than once in both TNG and Star Trek: Picard. With his death, Boimler finds himself following in the footsteps of these notable Starfleet figures.
Boimler faces the challenge of surpassing Captain Kathryn Janeway's impressive death record. His ambition will be put to the test. It remains to be seen how his death in season 4 of Star Trek: Lower Decks will impact future episodes. In season 3, it was revealed that Boimler's transporter clone, William Boimler, faked his own death to join Section 31.
