Guillermo del Toro wanted to make a Jabba the Hutt movie that would be the "Scarface" of the Star Wars galaxy.
Lucasfilm decided not to pursue the Jabba the Hutt movie and discontinued their anthology projects following the underperformance of Solo: A Star Wars Story.
Despite this setback, del Toro maintains a strong affinity for Jabba the Hutt and remains optimistic that the film could come to fruition if there is significant support from fans.
Guillermo del Toro's proposed movie featuring Jabba the Hutt in the Star Wars galaxy was intended to be the Star Wars equivalent of "Scarface". Recent revelations have shed some light on del Toro's vision for the film, previously hailed as the Godfather of the Star Wars series. Regrettably, Lucasfilm decided not to move forward with the project.
Speaking on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, del Toro has provided more insight on his concept for a Jabba the Hutt film, which was likely intended to be part of Lucasfilm's abandoned anthology project. "I have a strong desire to create a Jabba the Hutt Scarface, showcasing his rise within the criminal underworld," he shared. "My affinity for monsters is profound, and Jabba, being both my same shirt size and a character I adore, fits perfectly into that vision."

The Star Wars Anthologies Were Canceled
Lucasfilm's anthology projects were initially created as spinoffs to expand the stories of the movies. While Rogue One: A Star Wars Story achieved great success, Solo: A Star Wars Story failed both critically and at the box office, leading to the cancellation of the entire range. Lucasfilm has since repurposed some projects for Disney+ TV shows, but it appears unlikely that they will do the same with the Jabba pitch. Although there are hints that some spinoffs may make their way back to the big screen, such as positive news about Lando, Lucasfilm does not currently show interest in this project.
However, del Toro remains captivated by Jabba the Hutt and continues to express his enthusiasm, albeit without going into specific details. He is allowing Lucasfilm the space to reconsider if they witness a positive reaction from fans and ultimately decide to pursue it. Hopefully, this will indeed come to fruition, and Jabba the Hutt will finally become a reality.
