Article Overview
Star Trek: Discovery season 5 is the biggest Star Trek show of 2024, but the lack of hype surrounding its release is strange.
The show underwent reshoot and was finished before the strikes, yet there has been minimal information disclosed about season 5 since the initial trailer premiered in October 2022.
The lack of a release date and fresh clips is disheartening, however, an additional trailer is crucial to ignite enthusiasm for the series and indicate its powerful comeback in 2024.
Star Trek: Discovery season 5, the highly anticipated Star Trek series of 2024, seems to be lacking in hype. Paramount+ announced in March that season 5 would be the last season of Star Trek: Discovery, effectively canceling the series. However, reshoots were done in April to ensure a satisfying conclusion for the season 5 finale, despite it not originally being intended as the end of the show. These reshoots were completed before the strikes by the Writer's Guild of America in May and the SAG-AFTRA strike in July. Unfortunately, very little information has been released about Discovery season 5, not even to generate excitement, since the initial trailer in October 2022.
Star Trek: Discovery season 5 is praised for its more adventurous tone and will follow Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) as she leads the search for "the greatest treasure in the known galaxy." This intriguing treasure also attracts other individuals, such as new alien characters L'ak (Elias Toufexis) and Moll (Eve Harlow), as well as the new Starfleet Captain Rayner (Callum Keith Rennie). Due to the strikes, Paramount+ only shared five minutes of footage at San Diego Comic-Con in July as a substitute for a full marketing push for Discovery season 5. However, after the conclusion of Star Trek: Lower Decks season 4, The Ready Room aired a "sneak peek" trailer for Discovery season 5, which turned out to be identical to the one released a year ago. You can watch that trailer at the 28:00 time stamp in the video below:
We Need A New Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 Trailer & Release Date
Star Trek: Discovery season 5 is currently scheduled for an "early 2024" release date, but no specific date has been confirmed. Due to the SAG-AFTRA strike, Paramount+ has postponed any media events and press promotions for the final season. As a result, the release date for season 5 will most likely not be announced until the strike is resolved.
However, Paramount+ could still release a new Star Trek: Discovery season 5 trailer with fresh footage to kick off the new year. It's puzzling that the last time we saw new scenes from season 5 was in July 2023. Despite Star Trek Day in September and New York Comic Con in October, Paramount+ remained silent on any updates regarding Discovery season 5, not even sharing new key art or a poster. It's frustrating that they chose to recycle the October 2022 trailer for The Ready Room's coverage of Star Trek: Lower Decks season 4 finale when season 5 has already been completed for months. A new trailer for Discovery season 5 is necessary to generate excitement for the series and send a strong message to the fanbase that Star Trek will be returning with full force in 2024.
Discovery Season 5 Is Star Trek’s Biggest 2024 Event
It is peculiar that there is a lack of excitement surrounding the upcoming fifth season of Star Trek: Discovery on Paramount+. This season is the most significant event for Star Trek in 2024 on the streaming platform. While season 3 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds won't be available in 2024, fans can take solace in the fact that they saved Star Trek: Prodigy, which will now be streamed on Netflix. As for the eagerly anticipated Star Trek: Section 31 movie featuring the exceptional talent of Academy Award-winner Michelle Yeoh, its release in 2024 is uncertain due to ongoing strikes.
In addition to Discovery, the only confirmed Star Trek project scheduled for Paramount+ in 2024 is the fifth season of Star Trek: Lower Decks.
While Season 5 may mark the end of Star Trek: Discovery, the show must also live up to the immense success of back-to-back hits in 2023: Season 3 of Star Trek: Picard and Season 2 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. Both series enchanted devoted Star Trek fans, with Picard satisfying their nostalgia by reuniting the beloved cast of Star Trek: The Next Generation, and Strange New Worlds breaking new ground with humorous crossovers with Star Trek: Lower Decks and the franchise's first-ever musical episode. Both Picard and Strange New Worlds episodes soared to the top of the Streaming Top 10 charts, and Strange New Worlds' musical soundtrack claimed the number one spot on Apple's streaming charts.
The final season of Star Trek: Discovery is a significant event as it marks the end of the show that launched Star Trek on Paramount+. However, unlike Picard season 3 and Strange New Worlds, Discovery did not receive the same level of praise from Star Trek fans. In order for the final season to receive the recognition it deserves, it needs to generate excitement and anticipation from fans. This can be achieved by releasing a new trailer, key art, or other promotional materials in the near future. Star Trek: Discovery season 5 is set to premiere in 2024 on Paramount+.
Editor's P/S
As a passionate fan of Star Trek, I am concerned about the lack of hype surrounding the upcoming fifth season of Star Trek: Discovery. This season is the biggest Star Trek show of 2024, yet there has been minimal information disclosed about it since the initial trailer premiered in October 2022. The lack of a release date and fresh clips is disheartening, and I believe that an additional trailer is crucial to ignite enthusiasm for the series and indicate its powerful comeback in 2024.
I understand that the show underwent reshoots and was finished before the strikes, but I still find it strange that so little information has been released. I am eager to learn more about the new season and see what the future holds for Captain Michael Burnham and the crew of the USS Discovery. I am also curious to see how the show will wrap up its story, as it has been announced that season 5 will be the final season of the series.
Despite my concerns, I remain optimistic about the upcoming season of Star Trek: Discovery. I believe that the show has the potential to be one of the best Star Trek shows ever made, and I am excited to see what the future holds for it.
