Is this the end of the road for Jason Momoa's Arthur Curry, or could a third installment be in the works for the Aquaman franchise? Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, the second movie in the superhero series, is currently sitting at a disappointing 36% on Rotten Tomatoes.
In our Dexerto review, we gave "Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom" two stars, noting that it's not the outright disaster many anticipated, but still falls short of the triumphant farewell DCEU fans were hoping for. With a reported budget of over $200 million and a projected middling opening weekend, what does this mean for the future of the franchise?
Will there be an Aquaman 3?
Jason Momoa, known for his role as Aquaman, is eager to work on a third installment of the film. However, he emphasizes that the final decision is not up to him, stating to Entertainment Tonight: “I don’t necessarily want it to be the end… [but] I don’t think it’s really, like, a choice.”
Based on recent comments by Peter Safran, co-runner of DC Studios, it seems that the Aquaman movies have reached a satisfying conclusion. Safran stated that the two films together tell a complete story, indicating that this may be the end of the road for this iteration of Aquaman.
Writer-director James Wan has expressed openness to the idea of a sequel. "I haven't directed a third movie before," Wan shared with Empire in October. "So I'd be open to doing another [Aquaman] if I got the same freedom I've had on these first two. I'm not sure what direction [Gunn and Safran] are going in, though, so who knows? I've learned to never say never." Aquaman 2 can now be seen in theaters. For more on the movie, visit this link or check out the articles below:
Editor's P/S
As an enthusiastic fan of the Aquaman franchise, I am thrilled at the prospect of a third installment. Jason Momoa's portrayal of the underwater superhero has been nothing short of captivating, and I believe there is still so much potential for his character to grow and evolve. The underwater world of Atlantis is rich in lore and mythology, and I would love to see more of it explored in future films.
However, I understand that the decision to greenlight a third Aquaman movie is not solely based on fan enthusiasm. The financial performance and critical reception of Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom will undoubtedly play a significant role in determining its fate. While the film's box office numbers have been solid, its critical reception has been mixed. Some critics have praised the film's visuals and action sequences, while others have found it lacking in story and character development. Ultimately, it will be up to Warner Bros. to weigh the pros and cons and decide whether or not to move forward with Aquaman 3.
