Warning: SPOILERS ahead for Invincible season 2, episode 1!
Article Overview
In the multiverse story of Invincible season 2, it becomes apparent that Mark Grayson has the potential to surpass even Omni-Man in his villainous abilities. With the infusion of Viltrum DNA, Mark becomes a formidable force, joining forces with his father to create an unstoppable duo.
Mark's betrayal of his friends and loved ones in a charming manner makes his actions truly evil, even more disturbing than Omni-Man's. In the exciting premiere of Invincible season 2, Mark Grayson's journey to becoming one of Earth's greatest heroes continues, but it also reveals his terrifying potential as a villain. Season 1 showcased the brutality and heartlessness of Omni-Man, from his murders to his heinous acts in the finale. However, Invincible season 2 suggests that Mark Grayson could surpass Omni-Man in villainy. Despite his noble intentions of saving as many people as possible, the multiverse story in Invincible season 2 offers a different perspective on Mark Grayson.
With the tremendous power exhibited by the Viltrumites, it was always a possibility that Mark could emerge as a formidable antagonist. However, the latest installment has unequivocally established this fact. While the primary objective of the episode was to introduce the main antagonist for season 2, Angstrom Levy, it also brought a new dimension to Mark's character. Witnessing the potential he holds for transformation instills a chilling dread of the protagonist succumbing to villainy. Now that it is evident Mark can pose a threat to humanity in an alternate dimension, the idea of him taking a similar path in the show's primary dimension becomes an alarming possibility.
Invincible Proves Mark Grayson Would Be An Unstoppable Villain
The premiere of Invincible revealed a dark possibility: Mark Grayson could become an unbeatable villain. In season 2, episode 1, we witness an alternate reality where Mark joins forces with his father to conquer Earth, and the outcome is devastating. With the Viltrum DNA within him, Mark becomes nearly as powerful as Omni-Man. The unstoppable duo of Invincible and his father presents a virtually insurmountable challenge. Previous efforts have shown that Earth can only slow down a Viltrumite at best, but defeating them is an entirely different matter. Even the Guardians of the Globe and Cecil's most powerful resources were unable to stop Omni-Man alone, and with Mark in the picture, their combined force becomes indomitable.
While there is resistance in this dimension, embodied by the new Guardians of the Globe, they can hardly make a dent in the formidable powers of Invincible or Omni-Man. Mark, having learned the full extent of his abilities from his father and unrestricted in his actions, poses a terrifying threat as an evil force. There's a high possibility that he could exceed Omni-Man's strength, but even being slightly less powerful would still be more than sufficient for Mark to torment Earth. Whether he teams up with his father or operates independently, Mark proves to be a formidable villain who is essentially invincible.
Mark's Evil Turn Makes Him Even Worse Than Omni-Man
While Omni-Man's villainous persona can be somewhat understandable, Mark's descent into darkness amplifies his wickedness. Omni-Man's malevolent nature can be attributed to his unwavering loyalty to Viltrum. Although he seemingly developed genuine affection for Mark, his disregard for human life stems from his sole purpose of fulfilling his mission on Earth. While he managed to fit in for years, he never truly cared for humanity and is willing to mercilessly slaughter them. Mark, on the other hand, has never even set foot on Viltrum, which intensifies the chilling idea of him betraying those he holds dear.
The Mark Grayson of the main dimension in the show is likable and deeply compassionate towards his loved ones. Thus, witnessing him paralyze Atom Eve as an act of mercy is truly unsettling. What makes Mark's evil side even more appalling is that he still maintains the same comedic and charming demeanor. He cracks jokes and seemingly enjoys himself while taking the lives of his own people, embodying the epitome of evil. Mark's abandonment of his loved ones and loss of his humanity surpasses Omni-Man's adherence to Viltrum training, and Invincible exemplifies the potential for Mark to become a formidable yet villainous character.
Editor's P/S
As a Gen Z fan, I am both excited and terrified by the potential for Mark Grayson to surpass Omni-Man in villainy in Invincible Season 2. On the one hand, I am eager to see how the show will explore the dark side of Mark's character and the potential consequences of his actions. On the other hand, I am worried that the show may go too far and make Mark into a one-dimensional villain.
I think it is important for the show to strike a balance between Mark's villainy and his humanity. Mark is a complex character with both good and bad qualities, and I would like to see the show continue to explore both sides of his personality. I am also interested to see how Mark's relationship with his father, Omni-Man, will develop in the wake of his transformation. Will they continue to work together, or will they become enemies? I am excited to find out the answers to these questions and more as Invincible Season 2 unfolds.
