The Big Picture
Caspar's peculiar telepathic connection and otherworldly transformation in Season 2 of Invasion elicit speculation about his origin as an alien.
The fate of Mitsuki remains uncertain as she falls into unconsciousness following the opening of the portal. Is she deceased? Furthermore, the method by which Trevante will break free from the hivemind remains uncertain.
Why was Trevante allowed entry into the hivemind? Will the aliens attempt to retrieve the alien shard from him in Season 3?
The Season 2 finale of Invasion, titled "Old Friend, New Frontiers," left viewers with a whirlwind of emotions as co-creators Simon Kinberg and David Weil concluded the gripping 10-episode series on Apple TV+. While some of the showrunners' questions were answered throughout the season, there are still lingering inquiries that demand immediate attention in the upcoming third season of this science fiction drama. Many of these unanswered or pending questions revolve around the four central characters whose storylines and character arcs have finally started to intersect. Caspar and Mitsuki join forces within the hivemind of the alien brain, while Trevante and Aneesha cross paths at a concealed military base in an Oklahoma cornfield, where the initial events of the pilot episode took place. Desperate to locate her abducted daughter Sarah, Aneesha reluctantly releases Trevante from his confinement and entrusts him with her weapon. In the finale, Caspar and Trevante finally reunite, leaving Mitsuki as the sole main character who has yet to interact with Trevante. Nevertheless, our most pressing questions remain evident, so let's delve deeper into them.

Has Caspar Been an Alien the Whole Time in Season 2 of 'Invasion'?

In the concluding scenes of the finale, Trevante acquires the alien shard and ventures into the Oklahoma portal, which has been opened through Mitsuki's telepathic connection with the alien hivemind. Inside, carrying the enigmatic shard that has successfully neutralized the alien forces on the ground, Trevante is surprised by the presence of Caspar. It appears that Caspar, utilizing his peculiar telepathic link to the hive, has entered the hivemind. Resembling the Caspar from Season 1, he instructs Trevante to follow him. Trusting in Caspar's previous sketches that have led him this far, the Navy SEAL doesn't hesitate. However, as Caspar turns around, a close-up shot of his face unveils his clouded and completely white eyes, accompanied by an eerie alien squishing noise.
What the Heck Happened to Mitsuki in 'Invasion' Season 2?
The primary concern for the anticipated Season 3 of Invasion revolves around one crucial question: is Caspar an extraterrestrial entity? Ever since he emerged from his coma in the middle of the previous season, doubts have been cast on whether he remains human. Monty, played by Paddy Holland, has persistently claimed that Caspar has undergone a profound transformation since his "death." Moreover, Jamila, portrayed by India Brown, has also hinted at this possibility. Could Caspar actually be a manifestation of the hivemind, serving as a pawn for the aliens? Their ultimate goal may be to ensnare Trevante in a deceitful scheme, allowing them to reclaim the powerful shard that Luke, portrayed by Ahzy Robertson, has effectively utilized against the alien forces on the battlefield. As Season 3 commences, addressing these pressing issues will be of utmost importance.

Season 2 dedicated significant time to Mitsuki's involvement in the team's mission in the Brazilian forest. Her purpose was to gain insights into the alien technology and hivemind, enabling humans to launch a counterattack. Throughout the final season, Mitsuki underwent emotional and physical preparations to confront the hivemind alongside Caspar and combat the aliens from within. Mitsuki formed a close relationship with Dr. Maya Castillo (Naian Gonzalez), who took every precaution to ensure Mitsuki's safety within the hivemind. When Mitsuki used her abilities to open the portal door in the Oklahoma town, there were expectations of her playing a more significant role in the finale. However, after facilitating an armed Trevante's entry into the hivemind as part of a psychological operation, the last image we see of Mitsuki is her collapsed and unconscious on the floor. Is she dead? If she is, and if Caspar is not who he appears to be, then how will Trevante be able to exit the hivemind?
Does the Hivemind Allow Trevante Inside Because He Has the Shard?

Once Trevante enters the alien hivemind, it becomes apparent that he possesses the alien shard, which he raises against one of the numerous translucent walls within the expansive hivemind. Surprisingly, the aliens remain unresponsive to his actions. However, we have witnessed Luke effectively use this enigmatic piece of alien technology to counter the relentless alien species. These creatures, which have grown larger and faster than the initial velcro-like balls that infiltrated Earth, now feature four legs and tend to rampage in groups. They are considerably more intimidating and aggressive compared to their predecessors. Nevertheless, they can be halted by the shard that Luke and Aneesha have possessed throughout the first two seasons. Could it be that the aliens have allowed only Trevante to access their hivemind because they are attempting to retrieve the shard? If the humans no longer possess the alien artifact, the alien foot soldiers could attack with greater freedom and less resistance.
Will We Meet Sam Neill's Sheriff in 'Invasion' Again?

With the second season drawing to a close, the audience is brought back to the small town where the pilot episode was filmed in Season 1. This is the same town where Sam Neill once portrayed the retiring town sheriff. In the final episode, Trevante, Rose (played by Nedra Marie Taylor), and Aneesha stumble upon many of the locals who had previously vanished, only to be returned. However, they now find themselves confined and unresponsive, trapped in a catatonic state. It seems that whatever the aliens did to them has left them in a persistent vegetative condition.
Recently, showrunner Simon Kinberg shared his insights on Sam Neill's role in Invasion and whether we might see him again in a potential Season 3 during an interview with our website. Despite initial indications from previews and the first season premiere that the show would revolve around Sam Neill's character, a surprising twist unfolds as he is seemingly killed off early on. Now, considering that the aliens have "returned" many of the locals, there arises the question of whether Sheriff John Bell Tyson, portrayed by Sam Neill, might be among them. Could he perhaps make a comeback at some point? This would undoubtedly be an exciting twist, especially since we admire Neill's remarkable performances in other notable science fiction works like Event Horizon and, of course, the awe-inspiring Jurassic Park films.
