Introducing Secure Password Sharing with Proton Pass

Safely share sensitive information like passwords and credit card details with loved ones using Proton Pass, ensuring secure and convenient communication

Earlier this year, Proton released a roadmap detailing upcoming enhancements for its password manager, Proton Pass. Today, one of these enhancements, secure password sharing, is being implemented. Users now have the ability to securely share passwords, credit cards, notes, and other confidential data through the Proton Pass extension. This functionality is accessible to both free and paid users.

The security of password sharing is ensured through end-to-end encryption, making it far more secure than transmitting sensitive information through unencrypted email or text messages. Additionally, it is worth noting that users have the power to revoke access to shared data at any given moment. Furthermore, Proton Pass includes a shared vaults feature, enabling multiple individuals to share a collection of login credentials, credit cards, and other pertinent information.

The advantage of Proton Pass's free tier is that you can share passwords with non-subscribers. They just need to sign up for Proton Pass via invitation email. However, please note that the current update does not include sharing aliases. In a future update, users will be able to share Proton Mail proxy emails over Proton Pass.

It is important to mention that password sharing is not a unique feature, as most password managers also allow users to share sensitive information with family and friends. However, this update is significant for a few reasons. First, Proton Pass is a relatively new product, and its rapid development is truly impressive. With the addition of secure password sharing, Proton Pass is now one step closer to offering credit card autofill, a dedicated desktop app, and other features outlined in the product roadmap.

Proton's privacy-focused app suite offers secure password sharing, enhancing its appeal. In addition to a password manager, Proton provides an email service, a VPN, cloud storage, and a calendar. All these services prioritize privacy and are safeguarded by end-to-end encryption. They are available in both free and paid versions, and Proton recently introduced a family plan accommodating up to six individuals.

However, compared to other password management services, Proton Pass does have certain limitations. The primary drawback is the absence of a desktop app or web interface. Although these features are currently under development, Proton Pass users currently rely on the browser extension (unavailable on Safari) and mobile apps.
