EA's multiplayer FPS Battlefield 2042 has introduced an exciting limited-time event known as Dark Protocol. This event brings a brand-new 12v12 Killswitch game mode, along with new cosmetic bundles and rewards. Currently in its sixth season, titled Dark Creations, Battlefield 2042 has added a new map called Redacted, as well as new weapons and gadgets.

Since its underwhelming launch in 2021, Battlefield 2042 has been on a journey of redemption. Over the past two years, developer DICE has been actively working on improving the game by introducing themed seasons that include new maps, modes, weapons, and more. This has resulted in a shift in sentiment among the player base, with recent months showcasing a more positive outlook. Key changes, such as replacing the specialist system with the franchise's beloved class-based system and reworking the game's launch maps, have been well-received by players. In a recent milestone, Battlefield 2042 hosted a successful free weekend that saw a surge in engagement, breaking its own record for concurrent players.

Battlefield 2042 is taking advantage of its growing player base by introducing a new limited-time event called Dark Protocol. Running from October 31 to November 14, this event features a new 12v12 mode called Killswitch. In this mode, players will engage in intense battles to control the Forge, a structure that spawns Geists, eerie synthetic bots. The team that gains control of the Forge will receive support from these Geists, overwhelming and distracting the enemy team for capturing objectives.

Killswitch's map rotation includes Hourglass, Manifest, Spearhead, and the latest map, Redacted. DICE, the developers of Battlefield 2042, mentioned that the mode takes advantage of the game's smallest choke points, encouraging players to use defensive gadgets. The event offers rewards split into two weeks. In the first week, players can earn ribbons to unlock a weapon charm, a vehicle skin, and the Yellowcake Epic Specialist set for the Sundance operator. In the second week, new rewards will be available, including a player card tag, False Dichotomy and Swift Trust weapon skins. Additionally, Dark Protocol introduces two new bundles to the Battlefield 2042 store, each containing a Legendary Specialist set, three weapon skins, and more.

Currently, DICE has not hinted at or officially announced a Season 7 for Battlefield 2042. The game's future remains uncertain, particularly with various ongoing Battlefield projects at EA. As Dark Protocol commences on Halloween, it will be intriguing to observe if Battlefield 2042 can sustain its increased player population and ultimately achieve redemption, two years after its disappointing initial release.

Battlefield 2042 is currently accessible on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S.
