Following his departure from the DC Universe, director Zack Snyder has reinvigorated his creativity by dedicating himself to original projects. Notably, Netflix has played host to his endeavors, including the highly acclaimed Army of the Dead and the upcoming Rebel Moon. While these two films may at first appear unrelated, Snyder has disclosed that they are actually interconnected within a greater shared universe. In a recent interview with Total Film, Snyder unveiled that Rebel Moon, which initially began as an unsuccessful pitch for Star Wars, shares a connection with Army of the Dead. Surprisingly, the tie between these films diverges from conventional expectations, as they share a related essence, rather than a direct narrative link.

Snyder explains that Army of the Dead has an expansive mythology that didn't make it into the movie. He mentions a character from Rebel Moon that was intended to appear in the animated series connected to Army of the Dead.

The movie Army of the Dead, starring Dave Bautista and Ella Purnell, was released on Netflix in 2021. Tig Notaro replaced Chris D'Elia in a last-minute casting change. Following this, the prequel Army of Thieves was also released. The animated show, Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas, was originally planned to release directly after the first two films but was never completed.

"In a particular scene of the show, the characters venture into a different dimension by walking through a portal. Within this alternate dimension, they encounter various characters," Snyder explained. "For Rebel Moon, there is a scene set in a bar where one of the aliens is actually a character from the [animated series]. This establishes a clear connection between the two universes."

Rebel Moon features acclaimed actors such as Charlie Hunnam, Sofia Boutella, and Ray Fischer, who is known for their role in Justice League. The film follows the journey of a young woman who must assemble an army to combat the oppressive forces that threaten her homeland.

Rebel Moon Part 1 will be available for streaming on Netflix starting December 22, 2023, while Rebel Moon Part 2 is set to release on April 19, 2024. Army of the Dead and Army of Thieves are currently available to stream on Netflix.

However, it seems that Snyder has found a new home at Netflix, where he has been able to unleash his creativity on original projects such as Army of the Dead and the upcoming Rebel Moon.

The news that these two films are interconnected within a greater shared universe is exciting, as it suggests that Snyder is building an ambitious and expansive cinematic universe that rivals the MCU. While it remains to be seen how these two films will tie into each other, the fact that they share a related essence is intriguing and suggests that Snyder has a grand plan in mind.
