Rod and Leticia Gardner, contestants on The Amazing Race season 36 and a married couple, shared their relationship advice after finishing third on the CBS reality show.
In an exclusive interview with We on Tuesday, May 21, Rod, 46, emphasized the importance of putting effort into a relationship. He highlighted the need for accountability and self-reflection, stating that it's essential for both partners to take responsibility for their actions and contributions to the relationship. Rod pointed out that instead of always blaming each other, it's crucial to recognize that both individuals are part of the relationship dynamic.
The ex-NFL player mentioned that when both partners focus on being healthy individuals, they can also be healthy together.
Leticia, 38, shared, "We have put in a lot of effort over the years of being together."
Rod shared during an April episode of The Amazing Race that he ended up with Leticia because he needed someone to keep him in line. He mentioned that he used to be afraid of women who were sassy and had a lot to say, but he found himself gravitating towards Leticia, who has a great heart and always speaks her mind, even if it means disagreeing with him. Rod admitted that it was something he had to learn to work on and deal with, but he believes that their marriage has taught them the necessary tools to make it work.

Leticia shared, "I believe strong men do not marry weak women. It's essential to use your voice because you possess power and strengths that your partner may not have. By focusing on each other's strengths, you can cultivate a healthier relationship. Marriage is about both individuals, operating in their strengths and allowing each other the freedom to do so."
Their strong connection proved beneficial on the show as they excelled in three legs, reaching the finale. However, they were ultimately defeated by Juan Jose Villa Naranjo and Shane Bilek, who came in second place, and champions Ricky Rotandi and Cesar Aldrete during the season finale on Wednesday, May 15th.
Leticia shared that she and Rod have been a team for a long time, allowing them to navigate challenges effectively, especially under pressure. She highlighted the importance of communication and staying focused on the task at hand, which comes naturally to them due to their shared experiences in life.
Rod mentioned that they have a strong ability to motivate each other, as well as knowing how to push each other's buttons when necessary.
"He said, 'I know which buttons not to push, and she knows the same. As long as I kept her encouraged and maintained a positive attitude throughout, she would be fine.'"
Even though they were familiar with each other, Leticia discovered a different aspect of her husband during the race.
I've always known him to be very determined, ambitious, and competitive. Seeing him display those qualities within a team, especially since he plays professional football and is seen on TV, made me admire him even more. He is the stronger one between us, yet he remains patient and supportive towards me, which truly touched my heart.
All seasons of The Amazing Race can be streamed on Paramount+.
