Insidious: The Red Door's Rotten Tomatoes score has been disappointing. Released on July 7, the film is the fifth installment in the franchise that started with James Wan and Leigh Whannell's original Insidious in 2010. Directed by Patrick Wilson, who also stars in the movie, it follows the story of Josh Lambert (Wilson) and his son Dalton (Ty Simpkins), who are haunted by repressed demons after dropping Dalton off at college.
As the movie's opening weekend progressed, Rotten Tomatoes updated its score. Initially, the Insidious 5 Rotten Tomatoes score began at a modest 47 percent, but it has now dropped to 37 percent as additional reviews were added. This places it as the second-lowest-rated film in the franchise, just above 2018's Insidious: The Last Key, which holds a 33 percent rating.
Audiences Are Responding To Insidious 5 Anyway
The Insidious 5 has received a mix of reviews from both critics and audience members, causing its score to fluctuate. Despite having over 500 audience reviews, the movie's audience score remains remarkably strong at 71 percent. This is the highest audience score among all the Insidious movies, highlighting the considerable difference in opinions between critics and audiences.
In terms of box office performance, the Insidious 5 had a successful opening weekend. It surpassed Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny to secure the top spot, making it the second-best opening for a horror movie in 2023, just behind Scream VI. Additionally, it achieved the second-best opening weekend in the entire Insidious franchise, following the success of Insidious: Chapter 2 in 2013.
The strong audience turnout for Insidious 5 may be attributed to its cast. This installment, titled Insidious: The Red Door, brings together the main characters, including Renai (played by Rose Byrne) and Elise (played by Lin Shaye), for the first time in a full-length film since Insidious: Chapter 2. With ten years having passed since the release of the previous movie, the new Insidious appears to be effectively tapping into nostalgia for the franchise's original version, resulting in a predominantly impactful outcome.
