Article Overview
Director Chad Stahelski is interested in exploring new characters and worlds in the John Wick TV show, including the homeless group of the Bowery King's world.
Stahelski aims to reintroduce adored supporting characters like Rina Sawayama and Halle Berry's characters from previous movies, in potential spinoff storylines. The prospective TV show would explore various cultures and criminal organizations such as Italians, French, Japanese, Chinese, Middle Eastern, Indonesian, and Russians.
Director Chad Stahelski recently shared new details about the upcoming John Wick TV show. Stahelski first mentioned the show back in May 2023, but kept most of the information under wraps. He did confirm that the show will not focus on Keanu Reeves' character, and it will not feature him in the story. As the franchise already explored the origins of The Continental hotel and will soon dive into a Russian-based assassin story with Ballerina, fans have been speculating about which characters the new show will focus on.
In an exclusive interview with our website, Stahelski discussed the franchise's future and how he approaches crafting spinoffs. He expressed a desire to give these spinoff characters more fleshed-out stories in the future. Stahelski mentioned some of the characters he hopes to explore further, such as Rina Sawayama's Shimazu, Donnie Yen's Caine, Shamier Anderson's Mr. Nobody, Halle Berry's Sofia, and John Leguizamo's Aurelio. Check out Stahelski's comments below.
Some characters are extraordinary, and everyone is eager to see more from them, whether it's the first, second, third, or fourth installment. Certain characters shine in their respective roles, providing crucial support to the storyline we're developing. Personally, I am fascinated by the world of the homeless and The Bowery King's realm. If there are ways to intertwine these worlds and explore them further, I haven't figured it out yet. I am particularly drawn to uncharted territories like China and Hong Kong, with their rich history of tongs, triads, and Kung Fu. There is a whole realm waiting to be discovered and that's something we're currently pursuing with the development of the John Wick TV show. I am also captivated by Rina Sawayama's character and the potential for a prequel featuring Halle Berry's character from the third movie. Jimmy the cop and Charlie, portrayed by David Patrick Kelly, are other characters I absolutely adore. These little pockets of the John Wick universe have so much untapped potential. While I'm uncertain about giving them standalone projects, I would love to bring them back into other storylines. That's why the idea of a TV show appeals to us - it allows us to bring all these characters and their respective worlds together. [Interviewer: Personally, I think a TV show like Warrior set in the John Wick universe would be incredibly captivating.] Yes, I think that would be pretty cool too. Every culture has its unique elements that I find fascinating, especially when combining martial arts styles with criminal organizations and authentic cultures from Italy, France, Japan, China, the Middle East, Indonesia, and Russia. There are endless possibilities for exploration and connection.
Who Could Return For The John Wick TV Show
Stahelski and producer Basil Iwanyk are both interested in exploring more of the Bowery King's world on screen. Iwanyk believes that the homeless group led by Laurence Fishburne's character offers a unique contrast to the structured world of The Continental, being more informal and exciting. Stahelski's interest in expanding this character opens the possibility of a show similar to The Continental exploring their origins.
If Stahelski and his team decide to focus more on individual characters rather than a full organization for the John Wick show, any previously introduced character could potentially have their own storyline. The post-credits scene in John Wick: Chapter 4 sets up emotional future stories for Shimazu and Caine, while Mr. Nobody has become a breakout character thanks to his bond with his dog. Audiences are also hopeful for Sofia, played by Halle Berry, to return after her strong performance in Chapter 3 — Parabellum, as Stahelski has mentioned being in talks with her for a separate project.
Considering the fascination with characters like Leguizamo's Aurelio, David Patrick Kelly's Charlie the cleaner, and Thomas Sadoski's Officer Jimmy, it seems plausible that the setting for the potential John Wick TV series would return to New York. However, this does not necessarily imply that the show must solely rely on familiar characters. Chapter 3 — Parabellum introduced the realms of tongs and triads, expanding the universe and creating opportunities for a broader range of characters to take center stage.

This group offers a unique contrast to the structured world of The Continental, and I think it will be fascinating to see how they interact with the other characters in the show. I also love the idea of exploring different cultures and criminal organizations, such as the Italians, French, Japanese, Chinese, Middle Eastern, Indonesian, and Russians. This will add a lot of depth and variety to the show, and I can't wait to see how Stahelski and his team bring these different worlds to life.
